“PC” Beer Advertising
Carlsberg- “Probably the Best Beer in the World…”
Wow! Leave it to the Danes to come up with such a hard hitting ad campaign. I would have loved to been a “fly on the wall” at those selection meetings- “Okay Gunnar, how about “Carlsberg, It’s OK if you drink it” or “It’s pretty good beer”? (These were the Vikings??)
Every time I read their slogan, I have to chuckle. It just reflects so much of what is going on in the world, especially in Europe where political correctness is being taken to new levels. Why are the Danes so afraid to act like “Amerikins” and just say what they really think. Who are they afraid of offending? Bud? SAB-Miller? Maybe the European beer consumer would be turned-off by a slight “swagger of overconfidence”? Come on People, this is only a beer advertisement, not a U.N. resolution!
Here’s one that they are free to use even though I never drink the stuff-
Carlsberg, “The Best damn Beer in the World!”

I’m sure you’ve already heard, but SAB-Miller is about to become MillerCoors. I heard about it on Paul Harvey’s noon newscast yesterday, and found some information online this evening. Just what the world needs–more macro-brew. Blue Moon and Killians are OK, though.

Rich, FYI–Riverwalk Kroger has Sierra Nevada Anniversary Ale. I saw it there yesterday.

That is truly a great beer.

Gee, who voted them in?? I’d voted for either Westvleteren 12″Yellow cap” or Caracole.

Carlsberg is a ghastly beer. . . .and Thomas Hardy I’ve never heard of. . .
The ‘probably the best beer in the world’ theme has been going on for about 20 years in Europe.
Incidentally (bottom fermenting) Lager yeasts are called ‘Sacchromyces Carlbergensis’ as the Carlsberg were the first company in the world to develop modern, scientifically controlled brewing techniques.
If you want to try some great beers I suggest
‘Schiehallion’ - Harveston Brewery
‘Erdinger’
‘Abbot Ale’ - Greene King
‘Coniston Bluebird’ - Coniston Breweries
‘Clouded Yellow’ - St Austell Brewer (Vanilla flavoured!)
‘Golden Glory’ - Badger Brewery (Peach Flavor’

Thanks for the beer suggestions… I have had a few of those and will look for the others. I hope you did not come away with the thought that I actually liked Carlsberg… The article was aimed at making fun of the slogan. It has always struck me as funny, although I did not know it was that old a campaign.
As for the comment of Carlsbergensis yeast, you are correct, but it seems these days the official designation for the yeast is the alternate “saccaromyces Uvarum” Why? I don’t know…
