The “Beers to You” Reader’s Wish List
This very well may be the easiest blog article that I have ever written because YOU are actually going to write it for me…
Let’s share our beer wish lists with each other and the local beer wholesalers! I will start by adding 2 or 3 beers that I would like to see at WV beer retailers by the end of the year. I will share this list with all of the distributors that I know.
“I dreamed a dream of beer worth drinking”…

Now, back to the thread!
June 1st, 2009 at 11:56 pm
Realisticly we should be picking breweries instead of individual beers. No brewery is gonna want to send one or two of their products here and not the rest.
With that said, I spoke to some folks at several breweries recently and several of them have their expansion plans laid out for the next 2-3 years and WV is not part of them. DFH and Stone come to mind.
Some that we have a chance with include some of the PA brewers like Troegs and Victory. Ft Collins seemed interested. Bells is also a possibillity.
But this is a wish list, so in addition to what has already been mentioned, I would like to add Russian River’s PtY and PtE.
June 2nd, 2009 at 6:45 am
Lots of good suggestions already. I’d kill for a good German bock beer (mostly at 6.5-7% ABV). I’m already a fan of Stone and Dogfish breweries, and Stoudt’s Honey Double Maibock would be a wonderful early spring treat. In fact anything by Stoudt’s would be welcome.
It’s not just about the alcohol, however, I think there are some wonderful brews in the 5-6% ABV range that are being overlooked.
June 2nd, 2009 at 9:01 am
Kulmbacher Eisbock, haven’t had any for years, last purchased in Cincinnati.
June 2nd, 2009 at 9:10 am
Travis, I think most of us realize that the wholesaler franchises the brewery and not the individual beers, but it is important to show them that certain beers in the line-up are the ones to bring in, if not all of them. Wholesalers have a way of cherry picking based on all sorts of criteria; I just want to make sure they pick the right cherries…
June 2nd, 2009 at 9:39 am
I see Bear Republic’s Racer 5 on a lot of lists. Let’s not forget Hop Rod Rye !
June 2nd, 2009 at 9:43 am
I will be in Healdsburg in a few weeks drinking Racer 5 at the source! I will bug them about the WV market. You know at $1500.00 bucks per year to license in this state, it’s going to be a fight to get breweries to come here.
June 2nd, 2009 at 9:43 am
Stegmaier (”100% Pure Beer̶
http://www.stegmaierbeer.com/
Brewed in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania
The beer Grandpa drank!
June 2nd, 2009 at 9:53 am
I also want to add the “Big Beer” Imperial series from Boston Beer Company to the list.
Double Bock
Imperial Wit
Imperial Stout
http://www.samueladams.com/imperialseries/doublebock.html
About ten of us “beer writers” spent a few hours having lunch with Jim Koch in DC drinking these beers expertly paired with food at a little restaurant called the Firefly. We also tasted a 15 year old Triple-Bock and we finished with Utopias paired with a black-sesame ice cream.
June 2nd, 2009 at 1:54 pm
Lion Stout
Old Pecular
Mackisons
Tupper’s Hop Pocket
and allthings Dogfish Head
June 2nd, 2009 at 2:53 pm
I don’t think anyone said Flying Dog, so I’m saying it.
June 3rd, 2009 at 1:32 pm
I would be satisfied with Weihenstephaner, Bells, Orval, Jolly Pumpkin, and Oskar Blues. I’m not sure I’d need anything else.
June 3rd, 2009 at 2:23 pm
Most of the BIG beers I like have already been mentioned. I would like to add:
Ommegang Chocolate Indulgance
Weyerbacher Merry Monks
June 3rd, 2009 at 3:17 pm
Founders double trouble
Chimay blue
DFH 90
Weyerbacher Simcoe IPA
harpoon leviathan offerings (dream)
heavy seas below decks barley wine
brooklyn monster barley wine
June 3rd, 2009 at 10:06 pm
I’m going to be pessimistic. I don’t expect a lot of these beers mentioned here. Pliny the Younger/Elder. Surly, Racer 5, Breakfast Stout, Dreadnaught?..in WV..really? No chance in hell. I know it’s a wish list, but I’m going to be more reasonable. It’s more than likely going to start out with brewers who are already accessible to the state: Great Lakes Commodor Perry and hopefully the Blackout Stout, S.N. Torpedo, and (not getting my hopes up yet)Celebration and Bigfoot, and any Rogue brew. As much as I don’t like Sam Adams, I’d expect their longshot samplers, which has included the DIPA that is basically a clone on PtE. I’ve heard really good things about their Imperian Pilsner also. Many of the excellent PA (and surrounding state)breweries have beers under 6% that we still don’t see even in the adjacent counties of the north, I don’t think this bill is going to immediately change that, though they are the most reasonable to be added, so here’s my wish list:
Weyerbacher: mentioned many times already, but the heavy hitters are excellent. Double Simcoe, Decadence, Old Heathen, Blithering Idiot, Merry Monks, Quad, and dare I say Insanity
Troegs: Sunshine Pilsner, Hopback, Dreamweaver, Nugget Nectar, Mad Elf, Troegenator
Victor: Hop Devil, Prima, Hop Wallop, Abbey 6
Dogfish Head: 60 and 90 min IPA. I’ll pay extra to keep Raison D’Etre, the Cherry Stout, and Aprihop far, far away from WV. Nobody deserves that.
Bells: recently expanded south to GA and Fl, so this may be reasonable. Hopslam, Two Hearted. As with DFH, many other of their beers don’t hold up well (though I admit, I’ll take most over what is currently available around here)
Stone: Ruination IPA, IPA, arrogant bastard, double bastard, oak aged bastard.
Other possiblities widely available to our neighbors:
Green Flash
Great Divide
Brooklyn
Heavy Seas
Too many Belgiums to think about..
And lastly, the brewery that NEEDS to be here, and has been mentioned more times than I figured would already: Oskar Blues. Dales, Old Chub, Gordon’s, Ten Fidy. If I could get those on rotation I would be very happy.
Good Blog though, makes me thirsty and second guess moving to southern WV all at the same time! At least I can get Brutal Bitter around the corner.

Weren’t we promised some tasty products from St. George’s Brewing Co. out of Hampton, VA. I have a fond recollection of their heady, well balanced IPA (which won Best International IPA @ the Best of Hops Festival in London, 2000). They were also awarded the 2005 VA Beer Cup for best VA microbrew. More recently they were awarded Grand Champion for their Golden Ale in the Golden Ale/Kolsch category @ the 13th annual US Beer Tasting Championship. If memory serves, they also have a delicious line of cask conditioned brews without which no beer wish list is complete. I learned of St. George’s from one of Rich’s blogs posted after a beer tasting in Roanoke, VA last year. An award winning microbrewery close enough to ensure product freshness? Sounds like a winner to me. Thanks for keeping it out there, Rich!

I don’t think that Stoudt’s does the Honey Double Maibock any more.
One more to add to my list: Great Lakes Imperial Dortmunder.

I was also thinking about Southern Tier Brewing out of NY.

IIRC, Great Lakes Imperial Dortmunder
was available in bottles for a limited
run last summer. I bought a couple
of 4 packs, and after trying it, kicked
myself for not picking up a couple of cases.
Also, IIRC, it is available on tap at the
Great Lakes brewpub in Cleveland though.

A lot of what I imagine we’ll see are the high-gravity offerings of the importers already in the state, and possibly some new guys who finally can offer enough of their portfolio to make the $1500 worthwhile.
I’m not sure this is even close to correct, but here’s a listing of US importers of Belgian beers, and would likely bring in other beers as well:
http://www.belgianstyle.com/mmguide/lookup/lookup3.phtml
The ones I’d really love to see are D&V, B. United and DuvelMoortgat (which also handles Ommegang).
June 16th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
I like “Shiner”, brewed in Shiner, Texas. Unique tastes that do not go weak nor become watery. They offer the only “wheat” beer I ever liked. Their Bock is superb. Shiner Black Lager is so good. It will hold it’s own against the most expensive brews.
June 24th, 2009 at 11:12 am
Yes… We need to address the $1500.00 licensing fee. It is going to definitely stifle craft-beer availability in our very small market.
July 3rd, 2009 at 5:45 pm
Bellehaven Scottish Ale; don’t see that on anyone’s list yet
July 9th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
Speaking of available beers, I
was in CVS in Moundsville today,
and they were running a clearance
on “Witches’ Ale, the Belgian that
the WV Liquor Board allowed to be
sold last holiday season.
It was the first time I’d seen it
in CVS, and was already marked down
to under $8 a bottle, and was being
sold as a “clearance” item.
