Clo’s Uptown Eatery in the East End is named for Clo herself.

IF YOU GO: Clo’s Uptown Eatery, 1219 E. Washington St. Call 720-6176. Meals from $1.99 to $8.95

We were tired, my friend Janet and I. We had scoured the East End of Charleston, hunting an apartment for her. Janet is moving and wants to stay in the East End. “Let’s go to Miss Clo’s for a fish sandwich, that’ll cheer us up,” she said. I had no idea who this ‘Miss Clo’ was, so she told me where to park and I followed her down Washington Street East.

There it was, below an old ‘Subshop’ sign at 1219 E. Washington St.: ‘Clo’s Uptown Eatery.’ The tiny building is next to Boll Medical and across from CAMC General Hospital. As we sat down, we were immediately greeted by a waiter with a welcoming smile. All of Miss Clo’s waitstaff echoes her big smile and gentle manner. No pushy waitresses seem to be allowed to work there
We, of course, ordered the fish sandwich…

Mice at the mall

Which Town Center restaurants have the “rodent problem” mentioned in Tuesday’s Gazette? The answer is: Bennigan’s and Sakkio Japan, the food-court restaurant that’s always offering toothpick samples on passersby.

In a Jan. 26 exam, Kanawha-Charleston Health Department inspector Randy Newman wrote up Bennigan’s after finding mouse droppings, according to Newman’s report. The restaurant was given 30 days to correct the problem. That presumably means that Newman will be returning any day now to make sure.

Newman was also the inspector who discovered mouse droppings at Sakkio Japan, during an inspection on Feb. 5. He also put management on notice for a return visit within 30 days.

NOTED: Over at the Beer Blog

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

Foodblogistas,  take note: There’s a related food blog post over at Rich Ireland’s ‘Beers To You’ gazzblog. It poses the vexing question: ‘What beer would go best with a Gino’s Pubwich?’ pubwich2.JPG

I have been living here in the Kanawha Valley since 1982, but I have not heard of the Gino’s “Pubwich” until earlier today. Shame on me…
