CLOSINGS: No Soup for You!
By Brooke A. Brown
No worries, fellow foodies. There’s plenty of Blog in my Soup to go around. Instead, I’m referring to the current status of one of Charleston’s newer, more popular lunchtime haunts. Sorry, Cazon fans: the “No soup…” line is for you. There will be no grilled quesadillas, Texas spuds or muffaletta, either. Not for a while, anyway.
The following text is taken verbatim from the note currently attached to Cazon’s front door (as seen in the photo to the left):

Cazon Southwest Deli
To our loyal customers:
Due to circumstances beyond our control, we are temporarily closed. We have been informed by officials from the City of Charleston that due to structural concerns in the building, the load capacity of structural support under our restaurant flooring limits us to half of our customer capacity. In addition, there are other safety concerns that we have discovered and are having investigated to be sure our restaurant provides a safe and enjoyable dining experience.
Cazon will reopen when we are able to provide full service to our customers in a safe environment. Our business office, located in the basement of the building (which was built out at the direction of the building’s owner), has been closed by the City of Charleston’s building inspector and declared unsafe for occupancy until the building’s owner renovates it according to building code requirements.
We apologize for not being able to serve you at this time. We thank you sincerely for your loyal past support and anxiously look forward to the day when we can serve you again.
So there’s clearly an issue with the building’s structural support. Great. Get Norm Abram on the horn and it’ll be fixed in two days, max. But what are these mysterious “other safety concerns” that have been discovered? And why mention them if you’re not going to identify exactly what they are? Since my official Blog in my Soup press pass has yet to be laminated (or issued, for that matter), maybe it’s time to call in the professionals:
IF YOU GO: Cazon Southwest Grill, 222 Capitol Street, Charleston, W.Va. This restaurant is closed until further notice.

Sounds like they couldn’t pay their bills and needed a way out… Maybe bankruptcy wasn’t an option… so sue that always a way out….

No new news re: Cazon. Only that they increased the size of the letter in the window to posterboard size. Oh, and it’s a red poster. Nice touch.

[…] No, this post isn’t a follow-up to Rudy Panucci’s review of Queen’s recently released 2-CD/DVD live concert set. Instead it’s a follow-up to this old post from September which featured a note from Cazon Southwest Deli’s management to it’s “loyal customers.” […]
