It’s the Great Pumpkin Donut, Brooke Brown!

Pumpkin plus Donut

So here we are, nearing the middle of October, and I find that something (not unlike the middle of a donut) is missing. And then that very analogy reminds me: it’s Pumpkin Donut time at the Donut Connection! Well… almost.

My seasonal craving for the limited-edition pastry forced me into action first thing this workday morning. A quick phone connection with the Donut Connection’s manager uncovered the fact that they’re currently waiting on the delivery truck which holds the ingredients necessary to make the pumpkin donut. I’m envisioning large tubs of pumpkin pureé, hefty canisters of both cinnamon and nutmeg, and some top-secret ingredient that makes them that much more delicious.

In case you haven’t tried them, the Donut Connection Pumpkin Donuts are not your traditional, light-and-airy yeast variety. Like the Powdered, Dutch Crumb and Peanut, this one is a heavier, white cake-style donut. It’s lightly glazed – perhaps with that secret ingredient – and each bite bursts with spicy, pumpkin-y goodness. And as if donuts aren’t cheap enough already, the Connection’s Web site offers printable e-coupons to further your hard earned dollar.

To properly conclude this Public Service Announcement, it’s time to mention the ‘when’ portion of this post. According to the manager, they hope to have them available by the end of this week (the week of October 8th), but definitely by next week (the week of October 15th). Remember, the pumpkin donuts are seasonal. Once available, they’ll only stick around until the end of the year.

I love just about anything with Pumpkin!! Pumpkin Pie, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin bread, pumpkin spice coffee… but I’ve never had a pumpkin donut and Now I want one!!!

oh and I love the video :D

  2. Johnna Darnell Says:

Thank you for reminding us all about the pumpkin donuts. I will have one today. I loved the video as well.

  3. Mike Dillion Says:

Pumkin Donuts may be OK, but they’re seasonal and faddish. For a REAL donut, available year round, nothing compares to the plain ‘ol glazed donut from Spring Hill Pastry Shop (600 Chestnut Street…768-7397)in South Charleston.

They may not have the variety of styles and flavors that all the franchise shops have, but Donut Connection, Krispy-Kreme,and all the other donut wannabe’s pale in comparison to SHPS. There may be other shops somewhere in the world as good as SHPS, but I can’t imagine them being any better!

  4. The Lovely Miss S Says:

Well, I’ve never met a donut I didn’t like, and I’m sure it will be the same for the pumpkin variety! I have an idea for another Holiday-themed donut — gingerbread!

Perhaps a job in R&D at Donut Connection is my true calling!

    mmmmm… donuts…

  5. Brooke A. Brown Says:

    Mike D,

OK? Faddish? (I’ll give you ’seasonal’ because that part is true.) Man, have you even tried one of these pumpkin pastries?

I agree that the Spring Hill Pastry Shop is a gem of a place (the cinnamon rolls are incredible), but the Donut Connection is far from being a ‘donut wannabe.’ I mean, c’mon - Donut is their mid, er, FIRST name!

  6. Mike Dillion Says:

I’ll admit I’m not much of a pumpkin lover, with the exception of pumpking roll with cream cheese filling, but I will give them a try. But, as far my taste buds are concerned, nothing locally campares to SHPS–nothing.

Taste, like most things, is subjective, though, and that’s what I like about GazzBlogs. If nothing else, it’s agood place to find new places to eat and try new things for yourself.

By the way, have you tried Spring Hill’s cream-filled “hot dogs”? I highly recommend them, too.

  7. Drew from NJ Says:

if the pumpkin donut had jelly in it you could say it’s faddish ?

  8. Mike Dillion Says:

“Faddish”may not have been the proper word–perhaps if I’d said it’s a niche product…oh, well, I’ll deifnitely give it a try.

Drew from NJ–Jelly?! Now, if you’d suggested that cream cheese filling…but I get your point.

If nothing else, it got a thread of discussion going, didn’t it?

  9. Brooke A. Brown Says:

    Mike - Anytime there’s a discussion involving pastries and/or bakeries, I’m game.

Miss S - Brilliant! A gingerbread donut would be so good…

    ***NEWSFLASH***

Please note that today, Wednesday, October 17, 2008 is the OFFICIAL first day for the Pumpkin Donut at Donut Connection. That’s the good news. The bad news? They’re already sold out! Tomorrow’s gonna be another day…

In related news, the DC has also released a new, seasonal flavor: Caramel Apple. It’s an apple cake donut with caramel icing. Need I say anything more?

  11. Mike Dillion Says:

Now you really have my attention! I gotta try that one, too.
