Bottlescape: Inside Capitol Roasters

Capitol Roasters, at the corner of Quarrier and Summers streets, is Charleston’s most spacious coffeeshop. It’s front room receives the most glorious bath of afternoon sunlight, if you ever must evacuate your office cubicle and need to photosynthesize. Plus, it’s one of the few downtown boites where you can grab a Perrier. Or, if you need to replace a Fuze, here’s a bunch. (I recommend the White Tea Fuze.)

Signscape: Taylor Books on tap

With local coffeeshops like Taylor’s and Sophia’s offering free Wi-Fi (as a regular traveler, I live and die by Wi-Fi) it is beyond me why the behemoth Starbucks chain, locally and elsewhere, still charges for web access through T-Mobile. N’est pas?

Storescape: Estep’s makes it “Nu”

A slightly color saturated photo
(like putting too much creme de cassis in your Kir Royale) of Estep’s Nu Look clothiers, at the corner of Lee and Summers streets. If your life is drab, if March’s overcast clouds have you thinking Xanax, drop some visual lysergic acid diethylamide by simply gazing into Estep’s front window. If you come home with a purple shirt size 3X, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Sidewalkscape: What’s up with Ellen?

You must get to Ellen’s Homemade Ice Cream, 225 Capitol Street, when she makes her hand-churned pumpkin ice cream, which seems to takes place for about 17 minutes every summer. Worth the wait. And her paw paw ice cream pops onto the menu even more rarely, dependent on supplies of the famous/infamous banana-custard-tasting fruit, which I believe must be smuggled into town through the same perilous shipping routes as Heroin Black. Poppies and pawpaws — two of a kind.

Streetscape: Enlightened Capitol Street

Pardonnez-moi, but there are so many buttons and sliders in Photoshop, I just have to use some of them! Plus, there is something mysterious and charming about empty streets illuminated by the last light before dusk. That’s the Visions Day Spa building along Capitol Street being fingered by the sun.
