CarScape: Autos We Desire

In DowntownWV’s ongoing ‘Cars of Charleston’ series (well, this is the second one — here’s the first), we have again spotted a car parked downtown which, if only the keys had been left in it while idling, we might have been tempted to abscond with. This is an old MG, right? We would look good in it as we exited stage right for NYC for dinner at Aquavit, or perhaps stage north, for the Toronto Film Fest. Or maybe we shall just tool over to Gratzi’s at Town Center Mall for their fabuloso Salmone Incrostate con Pistachio.

    I ♥ MG’s.

When I was about six or seven years old I was getting into an MG Midget and somehow got the ?$#@! smashed out of my big toe by the seat. Now, many many years later, I still cringe when I see an MG.

So, yes it’s a pretty little car, but I couldn’t be tempted whatsoever to even get in much less steal it.

Funny how emotions and memories color our opinions.

My best friend in high school, the mayor’s son, got his dad’s MG as a hand-me-down. I recall it as noisy, cantankerous car. (And the stick shift figured into one of the more outrageous, legendary high school amatory exploits involving his red-haired girlfriend, but we won’t go there). We drove that MG from Cincinnati to New York, top down, and ended at his dad’s corporate headquarters hotel suite on Central Park West for the weekend. So my memories, charles, are considerably less painful.
