The Art Emporium, at the corner of Quarrier and Hale streets, has window displays always worth studying. Like these alien eyes, studying a passerby right back one day recently.

I appreciate the fact that the Quarrier Diner ‘Young’s Food House’ sign remains lit along Quarrier Street, even though you can no longer get a toasted cheese sandwich in its long-closed retro dining room. Oops, I think he noticed me shooting his way. An evening urban portrait, then.

A couple weeks back, I posted a photo lamenting the sorry state of the old General Seafood building along Leon Sullivan Way, wondering why no one had renovated the building after an arson fire more than five years ago. Well, someone had plans for the space. A couple days later, bulldozers flattened the site of so many fine Yugoslavian fish stews of years past. Now, only empty space remains. Please, Odin, no — not another parking lot in downtown Charleston?!

I am a fan of the stylish downtown Charleston double street-lamps. While they cannot compare with tres jolie Art Deco streetlamps of the Paris Metro, they hold their own for a bite-size American city of Charleston’s girth.

The photos below and many more besides of Tuesday’s snowstorm which carpeted Charleston, have been transformed into a soothing 4-minute multimedia slideshow. View it right now by clicking here. The delightful soundtrack features a song called “Snowdance,” written and sung by the dulcet-voiced Heidi Muller. The tune has some wisdom to impart about how quickly life passes, a timely reminder seen from the viewpoint of a single snowflake’s brief existence. It’s from the excellent CD “Seeing Things” by Heidi Muller and Bob Webb, which you can pick up at Taylor Books and Showcase WV in downtown Charleston. Or get it through the songwriter’s website at www.heidimuller.com

Parts of the city looked pretty desolate after everyone evacuated early, in the face of the forecast of yet more snow to come on Tuesday.
