Scott Niles Q&A (pt. 2)

Saturday, July 21st, 2007

Pt. 2 of our Q&A with Scott Niles…

GAZZ: What kind of help do you guys get in the way of promotions/sponsors/labels? Any special plans for the CD release?

SN: We had worked with a booking agent, but decided that the DIY method is best for us right now. Thanks to the Internet, Myspace and the like, we’re able to network, promote and book on our own. Bands across the country are doing it, and seeing much success. We think we can achieve a similar level of success. Of course, that doesn’t mean we’d thumb our noses at any promotional or label opportunity that may come by.

GAZZ: You’ve played all over WV and now beyond; how would you say “the local scene” is here compared to other states?

SN: Well, we can’t speak to West Virginia as a whole, since we primarily play in Huntington and Charleston, but having played in bands for almost 10 years now, I definitely think the trend of going out to see live music has waned a little bit. It’s kind of ironic, because we have more talented bands here than we’ve ever had, and the most effective means of communicating and promoting that bands have ever enjoyed. Go figure. But in the end, you do your best and hope for the best: sometimes we see less than stellar crowds in other states as well. I think it’s all about methodically building that fanbase.

Scott Niles of Threefold Theory Q&A (pt. 1)

Friday, July 20th, 2007

We caught up with Scott Niles, singer-guitarist for Threefold Theory. The Huntington-based three-piece rock outfit (Nik Phelps: bass; Pete Hurt: drums) is getting ready to do a string of shows at the Blue Parrot in Charleston with The Concept and Rose City. We talked to the 28-year old Rockland, Mass., native to get the history of the theory, to see what they’ve been up to, and to ask about their upcoming release, tentatively titled “Into The Fray.”

GAZZ: What bands made you want to play music and write songs?

SN: All sorts of artists. Growing up, there was a lot of music in my house. My brother was a high school and college DJ hooked on Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest and the typical parade of 80’s hair metal bands, while my mom and dad were fans of a lighter fare: Air Supply, Kenny Loggins, The Little River Band, The Rolling Stones, etc. So, I heard all of this music growing up, and I think that these influences are in my and the band’s songwriting. That is, rock music with some pop sensibilities and melody.

GAZZ: How many bands had you been in before 3FT?

SN: A few: Soul Intensity (an acoustic trio), The Ignytors and then Westlake. (more…)

The Empty Glass: Uncle Scratch’s Gospel Revival

Monday, July 9th, 2007

Friday, July 6 the two-man band known as Uncle Scratch’s Gospel Revival opened up for the Whiskey Daredevils at the Empty Glass. Brother Ed managed to keep the beat on his makeshift cardboard drum set, as Brother Ant wailed out the lyrics from the songs off of their latest CD “North of Hell.” Things couldn’t have been further south for me as I listened to songs such as “Johnny, Jesus, and me,” “The Gates of Hell,” and the crowd pleaser, (and I jest) “The Lord took my hand.”
