EVENT: The Concept, Punchline and friends 11.2 @ LaBelle

Monday, October 29th, 2007

We are just cluing you in
here, people. The LaBelle Theater (conveniently located at 311 D St., South Charleston) is a nice place for bands to play. Our friends in The Concept and Drop Ded Phred welcome Pittsburgh rockers Punchline and Triangle Shirt Factory to the venue this Friday.

(Triangle Shirt Factory? A timely name given that investigative journalist thing in the news this week on The Gap using child labor in India.)

The LaBelle only slightly puts you back into the 1950s, while seeing punk bands from today! Think about it. But not too much. Go to this show.

“Don’t Feel Guilty”

“Nancy Says”

Halloween shows back from the dead this weekend…

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Okay it’s coming up on Halloween. It’s okay for you try to scare people (and not because yer off yer meds). There are some rockin’ looking area Halloween shows over the weekend between Charleston and Huntington. But, no, Clarksburg horror-core punk rockers The Renfields are NOT playing out, which is lame.

I’ve heard people speak their mind pro and con about bands and shows here in the valley. One thing that always gets me excited is to see what all these freaks in all these bands take the time to do on Halloween. We tried to find every Halloween rock show in the area, so get your freak flag ready; let’s check out them out in bullet form.

Friday Oct. 26

* StychNtyme/Halogyn @ Julie J’s; Kanawha Blvd., Charleston — These bands play this venue a lot it seems, and if you come dressed as Danny Jones you can go around asking people for $2 to buy your drinks. And cameras. 9 p.m. Cover is $5.

* Zeroking/Rhythmic Ceremonial Ritual/Jimmy Mitchell/Dead at Zero @ Paradox Rift; 2127 Manchester Ave, Huntington — Zeroking stays busy out in Huntington and beyond, and singer Andy Haught should scare the crowd with his rockstar stage presence. 8 p.m., bring money and show up dressed in suits like Zeroking on their CD cover.

* Voices of Anatole/Relative Obscurity/Warriors of None @ Dave’s Den; Red House — This seems like it might make for a scary show. Go to VOA’s Myspace profile to see some scary imagery. Show up dressed as some ghost like out of some movie. 18 and up show; cost is $5, show starts 9 p.m.

Saturday Oct. 27

* 9th Annual Halloween Hootenanny @ the Empty Glass, Elizabeth St., Charleston — Three of our favorite acts here at Gatecrasher constitute the lineup this year. Charleston’s Rose City and The Ghosts of Now welcome Huntington’s Black Knots to town for some balls to-the-wall rock.

The Hootenanny, sponsored by Ancient Art Tatoos in Kanawha City, looks to be our choice for number one Halloween rock show this year, if that means anything. Costumes and prizes are in store, and I hope someone would show up as a hippie. That’s a joke. Get there before 10 p.m. and the cover is $6 if you show up in an outfit, $8 if not.

* Freak Tent/Swamp Jeuce/Face Melters @ The Blue Parrot, 14 Capitol St., Charleston — Longtime locals Freak Tent welcome Meigs, Co., Kentucky metal act Swamp Jeuce to town for the Parrot’s party. The Face Melters sound scary. Sounds like they opened the Ark in Indiana Jones. $5, 10 p.m.

* Threefold Theory @ Sharkey’s, 410 10th St., Huntington — One band that doesn’t need any costume or overt fashion image to rock out is Huntington’s Threefold Theory. They’ll do a Halloween show at Sharkey’s on Saturday. Some bands spend all year dressing up; 3FT is a band whose talent is kind of scary. Cost is $5 and it all starts at 10:30.

* Freekbass @ The V Club, (corner of 6th St. and 8th Ave.) Huntington. This is going to be the funkiest Halloween show on record. While we’ve never really talked to the guys in Freekbass, The Yetti (from the mountains of Beckley) are ultra-cool. 10 p.m., $10.

Look for more on the other Halloween shows in the print Gazz this Thursday, Oct. 25.

REVIEW: Billy Matheny & The Frustrations @ the Glass 10/19

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Friday we made the trip to Charleston’s historic East end to see Morgantown’s Billy Matheny (w/The Frustrations) and Jonestown at the Glass. We drank some Kool-aid, and Matheny ended up blowing our minds. Jonestown got things started with catchy rock tunage.

I honestly hadn’t paid much attention to this band but after they busted out the acordian it will be hard to forget them. Towards the end of their set they rocked out “Ball and Chain” by Social Distortion, giving people like me who didn’t know any of their songs a chance to sing along with a song we’ve rocked a million times before.

In between watching UConn-Louisville on the small screen TV near the grey machines, I got introduced to Matheny. Sharply dressed, well-spoken and downright disarming, Matheny joked he was glad that he didn’t have to compete against Billy Ray Cyrus, who played Saturday in Charleston. Matheny asked what could explain the resurgence of the Achy-Breaky croonster, and I could only say it involved Satan and a contract.

AUDIO: Q&A w/Billy Matheny (@ the Glass 10.19)

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

The blog title is correct, Gazz readers. Billy Matheny is coming to the Glass this Friday with his rock band the Frustrations (aka: American Sound Syndicate, or A.S.S.) and Jonestown. They’re from Magic Town, just like Matheny.

You might recognize the name. Billy Matheny. Well, it’s probably ’cause you’ve been checking out the blog for a while and you remember us talking about him coming to Taylor Books (liberal cauldron of literature) for an acoustic set. He’s one of our favorite acts, with his roots rock style. The bee’s knees.

We did a thing to catsup w/Matheny for the Glass show, and here it is in all its correctly-formatted glory… (ED. NOTE: Don’t you mean ‘ketchup?’)

__________
GAZZ: How have things been with you since we last talked? Still haven’t sold yer guitar obviously.
BM: Things are good. Haven’t sold my guitar and have actually had my eye on a few. I’ve been growing some impressive sideburns (according to me) and playing unimpressive basketball on Sundays (according to everyone else). Just this week, I launched my new website, www.billymathenymusic.com. At long last, we have an official web presence, and in addition to all of the goodies that come with a music website like tour dates, photos, and tour diaries, on November 1st we’re beginning a “download of the month” with unreleased live cuts, album out-takes and 4-track demos. When and if my cooking improves, I may even start posting recipes. (more…)

EVENT: The Dig-Its/Monotonix @ the Parrot 10.23 show

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

A rare Tuesday night show @ the Parrot is in store on Oct. 23, with The Dig-Its welcoming Tel Aviv’s own Monotonix to town for a night of straight up rock. We decided to get a little something on the show from Dig-Its drummer Bob Caution. He filled us in on how the show got lined up…

“We played a show with them in Morgantown last year when they were touring. I don’t know if it was their first tour or not. We played @ Fuel, which should be called Rocket Fuel, because it felt like they were burning it in the club. It had to be at least 105 degrees in there. No joke. Cool place otherwise.

Anyways, they had asked us to play and we said yeah and rolled on up to Morgantown. They squished two shows together as well. It was our show and a couple of metal bands whose names I can’t remember, and it was billed as “The greatest metal show on earth,” which Paul [Sex Viper] and I thought was hilarious.”

“It did turn out to be a great time though. The Monotonix are an amazing band. We are really looking forward to playing with them again.”

— To run in conjunction with our imagined video for “Another Shot” we decided to see what each member would have at the bar. If you see them @ the show hook them up. Except for one…

Mean Jean: Shot of room temperature whiskey, preferably Woodford Reserve or Jim Beam; Heineken and/or Blue Moon. Mainly beer and whiskey.

Sex Viper: Gin & Tonic

Bore Fang: (Cell phone problems. Guess he’s designated driver this time)

Harshbringer: PBR

Bob Caution: At the Parrot it’s Whiskey Sour or PBR. But the best drink ever is the Picard. (Named after Captain Jean Luc). It’s made of any canned juice, ice and vodka.

The Dig-Its Keep Rock and Roll Alive (10.18 Gazz article)

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

Before there was indie, death metal or disco, there was rock and roll. No matter how much things change, some things stay the same. Some bands still plug in and go, and sing songs about fast cars, whiskey, broken hearts and loud guitars.

Enter the Dig-Its.

If a rock and roll evolution exists that preceded all the genres of today, this old school punk band from Huntington would be near the big bang. If you’re like them, you’ve asked yourself “WTF happened to rock ‘n roll?”

Their answer: Nickelback.

The band (Mean Jean: vocals, Sex Viper: guitar; Bore Fang: lead guitar; Harshbringer: bass; and Bob Caution: drums) has been together in one form or another since 2004. They’ve taken stage names if you didn’t notice.

After starting with Viper and Caution in a garage, they added Caution’s cousin Mean Jean and after some lineup changes, they’re better off than they were four years ago.  “I think we’re a lot tighter than we were,” Viper said over the phone. “Joey [Bore Fang] has added a lot to the band.” The band practices in his dining room, a converted rehearsal space, “at least once a week,” Caution said. But due to the members being spread out between Charleston and Huntington and work and school “it seems less and less often lately,” Caution lamented.

The Dig-Its have booked a special Tuesday night show at the Blue Parrot with Tel Aviv, Israel’s own Monotonix. But the rare thing is not just the Tuesday show, or an Israeli band coming to town. It’s the Dig-Its doing a show at a bar.

They’ve recently cut out “the bar scene” and have been doing house shows. Three friends invited the band in and “They have a room in the back and they just throw you in there. They get touring bands from out of state to come in. It’s just donations; they pass a can around,” Caution said.

“It depends on the owner,” Mean Jean said over the phone, talking about area venues. “Some seem to know how to take care of bands. Then, there are some that are not so friendly.” “It really depends on the venue,” Sex Viper added. “The Parrot has been good to us. A lot of the other bars, especially in Huntington, they’re a little shady. They’ll take money at the doors and not give it to the bands. Others will cancel a band’s show and not bother to inform them.”

The Dig-Its have done some cool benefit shows in recent months. They’ve helped raise money for victims of the Emmons Apartment fire in Huntington, and they did a benefit show for Little Victories no-kill animal shelter. “I’m a social worker; I’ve always liked helping people,” Viper admitted. “For me, it’s great to give back to the community. And, I love Little Victories,” Mean Jean added.

The band is getting ready to record the follow-up to their eponymous 2006 “Green Album” as I call it. A notable friend and local musician has offered to record the band. “Bud Carroll has invited us to come in,” Viper said. “We’re gonna take our time and hopefully have it done by Christmas.”

But what do the Dig-Its have against radio rockers like Nickelback? “A record company will throw a bunch of guys who’ve never met together. They do a record and they’re millionaires. For them it’s just a job and it’s not from their heart,” Caution asserted. “They’ll do the same thing until people won’t buy it anymore then move on to the next thing,” Viper said.

The next thing for the Dig-Its is Tuesday’s show. “We all really enjoy playing together and we enjoy what we do,” Harshbringer noted. The singer summed up the band’s attitude thusly: “We play more for the love of music than trying to make money.”

EVENT: Thred w/Freak Tent @ 123 10.19

Monday, October 15th, 2007

One of our favorite Morgantown acts is Thred. Although we don’t have an actual Thred CD, we got hooked up with a download of one of their CDs. Very cool. Their catchy rock version of “the funk” will hook you fast, reminding you of your favorite old Red Hot Chili Peppers CDs.

Brian Pickens and Thredtron combine for some great art as well…always good seeing their flyers.

Charleston’s own Freak Tent will make the trip up there for the show. If you’re up that way, we recommend this show.
