Halloween shows back from the dead this weekend…

Okay it’s coming up on Halloween. It’s okay for you try to scare people (and not because yer off yer meds). There are some rockin’ looking area Halloween shows over the weekend between Charleston and Huntington. But, no, Clarksburg horror-core punk rockers The Renfields are NOT playing out, which is lame.

I’ve heard people speak their mind pro and con about bands and shows here in the valley. One thing that always gets me excited is to see what all these freaks in all these bands take the time to do on Halloween. We tried to find every Halloween rock show in the area, so get your freak flag ready; let’s check out them out in bullet form.

Friday Oct. 26

* StychNtyme/Halogyn @ Julie J’s; Kanawha Blvd., Charleston — These bands play this venue a lot it seems, and if you come dressed as Danny Jones you can go around asking people for $2 to buy your drinks. And cameras. 9 p.m. Cover is $5.

* Zeroking/Rhythmic Ceremonial Ritual/Jimmy Mitchell/Dead at Zero @ Paradox Rift; 2127 Manchester Ave, Huntington — Zeroking stays busy out in Huntington and beyond, and singer Andy Haught should scare the crowd with his rockstar stage presence. 8 p.m., bring money and show up dressed in suits like Zeroking on their CD cover.

* Voices of Anatole/Relative Obscurity/Warriors of None @ Dave’s Den; Red House — This seems like it might make for a scary show. Go to VOA’s Myspace profile to see some scary imagery. Show up dressed as some ghost like out of some movie. 18 and up show; cost is $5, show starts 9 p.m.

Saturday Oct. 27

* 9th Annual Halloween Hootenanny @ the Empty Glass, Elizabeth St., Charleston — Three of our favorite acts here at Gatecrasher constitute the lineup this year. Charleston’s Rose City and The Ghosts of Now welcome Huntington’s Black Knots to town for some balls to-the-wall rock.

The Hootenanny, sponsored by Ancient Art Tatoos in Kanawha City, looks to be our choice for number one Halloween rock show this year, if that means anything. Costumes and prizes are in store, and I hope someone would show up as a hippie. That’s a joke. Get there before 10 p.m. and the cover is $6 if you show up in an outfit, $8 if not.

* Freak Tent/Swamp Jeuce/Face Melters @ The Blue Parrot, 14 Capitol St., Charleston — Longtime locals Freak Tent welcome Meigs, Co., Kentucky metal act Swamp Jeuce to town for the Parrot’s party. The Face Melters sound scary. Sounds like they opened the Ark in Indiana Jones. $5, 10 p.m.

* Threefold Theory @ Sharkey’s, 410 10th St., Huntington — One band that doesn’t need any costume or overt fashion image to rock out is Huntington’s Threefold Theory. They’ll do a Halloween show at Sharkey’s on Saturday. Some bands spend all year dressing up; 3FT is a band whose talent is kind of scary. Cost is $5 and it all starts at 10:30.

* Freekbass @ The V Club, (corner of 6th St. and 8th Ave.) Huntington. This is going to be the funkiest Halloween show on record. While we’ve never really talked to the guys in Freekbass, The Yetti (from the mountains of Beckley) are ultra-cool. 10 p.m., $10.

Look for more on the other Halloween shows in the print Gazz this Thursday, Oct. 25.
