WEEKEND WATCH: 2.7-2.9
Whether it’s in print or online, area rock fans consider the “Weekend Watch” series from the Gatecrasher blog at thegazz.com essential reading. Whether you’re in Charleston, Huntington, or even Morgantown, nobody comes close to us when it comes to putting rock show information in your hands each weekend.
THURSDAY, Feb. 7:
We’ll kick the weekend off early this time, with a couple of cool Thursday shows. First, Jeff Ellis and bandmate Phil James host the singer-songwriter night at Huntington’s V Club (corner of 6th ave. & 8th St.). The duo welcomes Nick Shelton to town for the gig, which should be rockin’. Ellis recently went back into the studio to begin recording the follow-up to last year’s “A Front Seat for the End of the World” so, look for that later this year. 10 p.m.-2 a.m., pay $3 at the door.
Also Thursday, if you’re more into punk rock mixed with some ska, and you deal in lead, The Flying Hellfish and Cryptorchid Chipmunk might be for you. They play 123 Pleasant St. in Morgantown starting at 10 p.m.. These are bands that, if they came to Charleston, we’d have to wear adult diapers to conceal our excitement. Bring money.
FRIDAY, Feb. 8:
Friday, Dog Soldier deploys to Fuel (234 1/2 Walnut St.) in Morgantown for a show. The band, which features the rockstar singing of Justin Johnson, recently picked up Shorthrow singer-bassist Jody Ashley from what we hear. Based primarily out of Ripley and Tom Peden Country, this is a band you should check out if you have the chance. 10 p.m., cash money.
If you’re in Charleston Friday, swing by Blues BBQ to check out one of our local cowpunk faves, Buckstone, rock out. The “Buckersfield” trio is set to release a new CD soon, according to what it sez on their Myspace profile. 8 p.m. and bring extra money for the good food and beer. Ohhh, the beer. You know you love it.
SATURDAY, Feb. 9:
As it should be, Saturday will cap things off nicely with a couple of cool shows. First and foremost, Charleston’s #1 punk band The Concept welcomes Huntington’s own Black Knots to The Blue Parrot (14 Capitol St.). We don’t get any money for incessantly promoting THC’s shows, we just think they rock. And with the Knots coming to town, this has got to be our pick o’ the week. Parrot shows are normally $5, 10 p.m.
In Huntington Saturday, there’s a cool show at The V Club, with Luke Jivetalker joining Bud Carroll & the Southern Souls to kick out the jams, as it were. This show starts at 8 p.m., according to the flyer we noticed. Bring extra money just in case.
In another Huntington show Saturday, APOS returns to the scene for a show at Paradox Rift. Late entry; we amost missed it. But don’t miss the chance to see these guys (and girl).
