WEEKEND WATCH: 2/22-2/23
This installment of Weekend Watch is packed with cool Charleston-area rock shows, so read on to find out which shows to spend your money at.
Buckstone is a sure bet for live, fun music this Friday at the Empty Glass.
Friday, Feb. 22
Charleston has no fewer than four shows Friday night that could please music lovers of all affiliations. We’ll start with Buckstone at The Empty Glass. This Charleston-based Buckersfield cowpunk trio are set to do a show starting around 10 p.m., and if you run into Tom, Jamie, or Diana, ask them when their new CD comes out, then tell us. Cover will likely be $5 or something.
Right on Capitol Street you can find a couple of cool rock bands playing Friday night. At The Blue Parrot you’ll find Huntington’s Zeroking hosting a Jagermeister party with War Creek Mafia and XFactor 1. Zeroking is getting ready to go back into the studio to record the follow-up to “The Sweet Sale of Excess” and this will be your last chance to catch them live in town. 10 p.m., $5.
Also Friday night, Sissonville’s own Shorthrow does a show at the Sound Factory (812 Kanawha Blvd.) right around the corner from the Parrot. The Sound Factory hasn’t been doing a lot of shows recently, but looks to be picking it back up for the spring.
Boone County folk rocker Alan Griffith brings his band Blue Million to Taylor Books on Capitol Street Friday at 8 p.m. The band just released a new CD, which you can find at Budget Tapes, and which did earned a favorable review from Michael Lipton here at the Gazz. One of the tunes was “Song of the Day” at the SoundCheck gazzblog — click here to hear it. This should be a free show, which fits right in with our budget.
So, you’re in Morgantown Friday, don’t have jack to do, and are reading the Gazz to find out about cool shows? You’re in luck for once, because our “pick o’ the week” is in Magic Town, as The Emergency join ‘85 Flood for their CD release party for “Toolshed Shangri-La” at 123 Pleasant Street. Hear ‘85 Flood’s “Ghosts of Cabell County” at the Soundcheck blog at thegazz.com, and then go hear both these killer bands live, and get the CD at the show. 10 p.m., 18+, $5.
Saturday, Feb. 23
Saturday features some rockin’ shows, too, with Charleston’s Rose City hosting The Deviltones and Pro-Death Rally at the Parrot; Jubal Kane and Diablo Blue play the Glass, and Larry Keel and Natural Bridge come to the V Club in Huntington.
So, see? The “Weekend Watch” series is fun, and informative. We call it edutainment.
