WEEKEND WATCH: March 7-8

Do you like rock and/or roll? Yer in the right place. There are some rockin’ shows indeed this weekend. Charleston, Huntington, or Morgantown; we cover them all here at the “Weekend Watch” series for the Gazz…read on.

Friday, March 7th
What all goes on in Huntington on a Friday night? Too much to talk about in the paper. But one of our favorite bands at the Gatecrasher blog comes to the V Club (6th Ave. & 8th St.) Friday night. The Red Velvet will do a show with Fervor and Charlie Brown Superstar. The Red Velvet (Jordan Andrews: bass/vox; Mark Evans & Russ Fox: guitar; Jonathan Jefferson: drums/synth) sounds like no other band in the state, with their atmospheric piano and synth-tinged space rock. They’ve got a new 15-song CD coming out, and if it’s anything like their 6-song debut, they’ll be sleeping in a bed of Euros. 10 p.m., bring money.

Also Friday night, Pittsburgh’s Jazzam brings the funk to The Empty Glass (410 Elizabeth St.) in Charleston before doing a show Saturday night at the V Club. Check them out if you think you’re “more funk” than us. Okay, we admit it: we’re not that funk.

Saturday, March 8th
So, you’re in Charleston Friday night, and you’re totally bummed because your car is sitting on blocks, and you didn’t get to see The Red Velvet Friday night. It’s cool: you’ve got the “Weekend Watch” series in hand, and there’s an equally cool show at The Empty Glass Saturday night as The Greens come down from Morgantown for their first show at the Glass. NOTE: Check out my story on The Greens in this week’s gazz.

Check out The Greens online to get a taste of their “Appalachian neo-classic rock soul boogaloo” for yourself. These guys (Andy Tuck: guitar/vox; Ben Sweeney: bass; Nathan Yoke: drums) and their style should fit in perfectly at the Glass. This will be a good chance to catch them if you miss them at 123 Pleasant St. Friday night with Treasure Cat. 10 p.m., likely $5.

There’s a couple of other cool shows Saturday. Boone County’s Alan Griffith brings his band Blue Million to Capitol Roasters (Summers St.) in Charleston for an early 8 p.m. show. Not only do you get to check out some cool music in a nice atmosphere, there’s no cover. Go and tell them the Gatecrasher sent you, and that you get in for free. Do it — see how they look at you. And report back.
Saturday night, a cool band from Morgantown called One Hundred Hurricanes (formerly The Getaway) comes to town for a show at The Blue Parrot (14 Capitol St.) with Dog Soldier. These are some bands you should definitely check out if you’re in town. 10 p.m., likely $5.
