WEEKEND WATCH: St. Patty’s Weekend Edition

Ideally, the “Weekend Watch” series clues area rock fans into what’s going on in the bar scene. Nothing changes with this edition. However, it’s a special St. Patrick’s Day issue, as venues gear up to celebrate YOUR favorite drinking holiday. And we’re your number one source for which shows you want to go to to celebrate your Irish (see: drinking & partying) roots.

Friday, March 14:
The cool shows seem to be in Huntington — no offense, Charleston and Morgantown. The Hillbilly Gypsies (Morgantown Bluegrass/Americana) come to the V Club (corner of 6th Ave. & 8th St.) for a show with Lewisburg’s Rust Kings, and their version of “Appalachian Stompgrass.” Show begins around 10 p.m., cover is $8 at the door, and ages 18 and up are welcome. There should definitely be some pickin’ and grinnin’ at this show.

Also Friday, if bluegrass isn’t your thing, and you’re in the market for something more along the lines of punk rock, show up at Club Echo (1318 4th Ave.) in Huntington for a night of feel good, balls-to-the-wall rock with Huntington’s Black Knots, Portsmouth, Ohio’s Bible Beaters, The Underdogs (Ky. pop punk) and Amish Electric Chair (the best band name we’ve came across so far this year). The Knots have been busy working on a new CD, so they’ll be ready to rock for this show. 10 p.m., $5 cover.

Saturday, March 15:
The St. Patty’s Day parties start early at The V Club, as Morgantown’s Joe Prichard Band joins The Yetti for a night of Irish-themed jam band, funk-tastic fun. Prichard, former frontman for The Recipe, has a band loaded with talent; most notably Billy Matheny on guitar, etc., and Charleston (and Buckstone) drummer Tom Kirk. Get there around 9 p.m., cover is $7, and sorry, all you cute little minors, this IS a 21 and over show.

Oh, so you’re in Charleston Saturday night and you want to go to a St. Patty’s Day party? You’re in luck if you’re reading this, because Rose City (Charleston stoner rock) welcomes Indianapolis rockers Devil To Pay to the Blue Parrot (14 Capitol St.) for an evening of moderate-to-heavy “favorite legal beverage” consumption. Every show is St. Patrick’s Day for Rose City; they’ll see you there at the bottom around 10 p.m., cover should be $5.

Monday, March 17:
It’s the day of green beer and an alarming increase in public intox arrests. Plus, some cool St. Patty’s Day shows in Huntington and Morgantown. The Dig-Its and Sarasota (Scots-Irish punk bands from Huntington) play Club Echo with the Knots. The Dig-Its just released their killer new CD “Know It All” which you should buy if they have some, and Sarasota should have their new CD available as well. 10 p.m., $5 cover.

Up in Morgantown on Monday, West By God (Morgantown’s version of Clutch), Wilderkin, and Lo-Pan (Columbus hard rock) converge on 123 Pleasant St. for a night of what we can only assume to be moonshine-running good times. Seriously, hard rock and hard drinking at this show. 10 p.m., bring some money.

And from us here at the Gatecrasher blog; please drink responsibly and utilize the ol’ designated driver for yer St. Patty’s Day fun.
