WEEKEND WATCH: 3.21-3.22
So Spring has now officially sprung and with the warmer temperatures, readers of Weekend Watch can catch a cool band in Charleston, Huntington, and Morgantown. Maybe even wear shorts outside! The state’s number one newspaper is your number one source of rock show schedules — the Weekend Watch series clues groupies, posers and local gods alike into where the cool shows are. This weekend…
FRIDAY, March 21:

We’d like to talk to you about a serious subject: our local rock “lock of the week,” as we call it. Morgantown invades the Blue Parrot (14 Capitol St.) Friday as Billy Matheny and The Frustrations will hit the stage around 10:30, opening for Morgantown indie rockers Red Bones (photo above).
Red Bones (Neal Humphries, Wes Thomas, Jason Harler, Derek Thomas) is a new incarnation of what was once called The Ones That Got Away, one of our favorites at the Gatecrasher blog; a mix between The Pixies and Modest Mouse.
There seriously must be some rock and roll pharmaceuticals being pumped into the water supply up there; a TON of great bands from Morgantown. TOTGA was one of them. But Red Bones seems to rock a little harder than TOTGA from what we’ve heard. Even their moustaches are indie.
Red Bones recently spent some time in a cabin in Fayette County recording, and generally being a rock band and wearing wigs and drinking beers. It’s a return trip to the Parrot for Red Bones and, with Matheny blowing everybody away with his songwriting and shredding as opener, it should be a great show. If you haven’t checked out either of these acts yet, by all means do so. Cover is $5.
Also Friday in Charleston, Rose City welcomes The Stonecutters (Louisville metal) to town for a show at the Empty Glass (410 Elizabeth St.). Show will start around 10 p.m., and if you don’t have enough cash for the show, have the government bail you out in time for the music.
We love to see bands come together for good causes, especially when the bands rock. Such is the case Friday in Morgantown as Spouse (N. Hampton, MA rock) comes to town to rock with Sandra Black, J Marinelli, and The Stonewall Jackson Five for an evening of art, sculpture, food, and — oh yeah — rock at 123 Pleasant Street.
It’s a catered show, with Solera Cafe, New Day Bakery, and Emily Smith Zimmerman laying out the spread. Just don’t be sweeping food into your purse or fanny pack, people. That’s tacky. $5 will get you in the door, be there around 10 p.m., and if you buy the new Sandra Black EP they’re donating all proceeds to the Corey Bicanich family. Good show, good cause. Be there if you’re up there.
SATURDAY, March 22
So, it’s Saturday, you’re a young skateboarder who’s into crazy punk rock, and you live in or near Huntington? Head to the YWCA (633 5th Ave.) at 6 p.m. to see Reading, Pa., skate punk heroes Common Enemy thrash the show. The hugely popular band held a contest to see which towns they’d play on tour, and Huntington made the cut thanks to Out of Step Booking. Also appearing will be punk bands Most Ill, New Clear Future, All My Strength, and Don’t Look Back. Don’t skate? You’ll want to after this show. Cover is $8, and DON’T DRINK AT A YWCA SHOW!
