WEEKEND WATCH: 4.11-4.13
If there were a college major in local music coverage, the “Weekend Watch” series would be required reading for your senior seminar. You couldn’t just show up at random buildings and expect to rock, you’d actually have to read it, go to the shows, and report back in essay form (and maybe with pics). It’s not that complicated, but if you’re looking for cool shows this weekend in Charleston, Huntington, and Morgantown, read on…
Friday and Saturday at 123 Pleasant Street in Morgantown several cool Magic Town acts come together to support the Mountaineer Boys & Girls Club. On Friday, Billy Matheny, It’s Birds, J Marinelli, and members of ‘85 Flood, The Emergency, Tanglewood and the Morgantown Rounders go “Off The Record” to perform entire recreations of albums from Television, Wire, and Bob Dylan. Saturday, they’ll do it again, only “On The Record” as rapper 6′6 240″ joins Billy Matheny and the Frustrations and ‘85 Flood in the second night of the event sponsored by WVU radio station U92FM. Each night the show starts at 10 p.m., the cover is $5, and, it goes to a good cause, so swing by if you’re up that way.

In Huntington on Friday, some of our favorite bands at the Gatecrasher blog converge on Club Echo (1318 4th Ave.), as Bud Carroll, Holden Caulfield, Sarasota, and Morgantown folk rocker Andrew Iafrate come together. Whether it’s southern-fried blues & rock, hardcore, punk or folk, this is quite a lineup indeed. Be there around 10 p.m., and cover is $5.

Saturday in Charleston there are a couple of cool shows featuring Charleston’s punk rock heroes The Concept. First, they’ll do an all-ages show at St. Albans’ Boom Boom Room with Charleston emo act Time and Distance, Pittsburgh-based power-pop acts Victory Lane and The Composure, and The Excitement! (Huntington power pop). The Boom Boom Room was once known as the Brickhouse and is located at Olde Main Plaza. Show starts at 6 p.m. and the cover is $8.
Later that night The Concept will roll over to the Blue Parrot (14 Capitol St.) in Charleston for a show with their hip-hop friends B-Rude and Meuwl, and be joined again by The Composure. If you’re anti-straight edge or something, or just missed the all-ages show, then this show is for you. 10 p.m., $5.
So let’s say you’re out of town Friday and/or Saturday, and you missed all these cool shows. So now it’s Sunday, what to do, what to do? Check out a Sunday night special at Lucky Laverty’s (214 Leon Sullivan Way) in Charleston as Rose City (Charleston stoner rock) does a show with SlowKillDrive, a cool new punk band from Charleston. Show starts at 9 p.m., cover is a low-low $3, but sorry, kids, it’s a 21 and over show.

Have a good time at the show, and be sure to cite us correctly.
