WEEKEND WATCH: 4.17-4.19

So you’ve got your taxes done and you don’t have to worry about being incarcerated for a whole ‘nother year. Why not celebrate by going to a rocking area show this weekend? The Weekend Watch series rolls on, and it’s still legal to read, so let’s go!

Thu. 4.17:
The Empty Glass (410 Elizabeth St.) welcomes Huntington alt-metal three-piece A Place of Solace to town. Joining them on the bill is Pittsburgh shoegaze act Unlikely Japan (AKA Matt Kiefer) for an acoustic set; the band is likely named after a Wilco song (hear: “Impossible Germany”). APOS is one of the more unique local acts, and it’s good to see them back doing shows. 10 p.m., no more than $5 cover. Cool show.

Fri. 4.18
So it’s Friday, and you want to know the coolest show? According to a push poll we conducted at the Gatecrasher blog, it’s in Huntington at Paradox Rift (2127 Manchester Ave.). Former Misfits frontman Michale Graves swings through for an acoustic gig, with opening acts including The Concept (Charleston hero punk); The Renfields (Fairmont Transylvania pogo-punk); Murderous Geese (Ashland, Ky. punk) and some other bands we honestly don’t know anything about. It’s worth going just to see The Renfields and The Concept, so why not go? At least it’s not at the Monkey Bar. $10 at the door, get there around 9 p.m.

Friday in Charleston, Threefold Theory (Huntington power pop), StychNtyme (Charleston alt-metal), and Charleston metal act Voices of Anatole do a rare show at The Sound Factory. Seems like they’re booking more shows, and look for Clutch to swing through there soon. 10 p.m., cover is $5.

Sat. 4.19
Cool Saturday shows, with The Joint Chiefs Reunion at the Glass with The Tom Batchelor Band opening up. That show should be packed.
