Whole lotta cool shows goin’ on this weekend, led by CD release shows for The Concept. So let’s go!

THU May 29
Some people aren’t aware of the rock goings on any particular Thursday night. That’s where the Weekend Watch series comes in. Bud Carroll & The Southern Souls (Huntington neo-blues) open for Blind Melon at Fluid (formerly the Monkeybar, located at 611 4th Ave.) in Huntington. There will quite likely be new Bud Carroll EP’s for sale, as they just released their new CD a few weeks ago at Marley’s Doghouse. We can’t confirm that, but it’s high quality speculation. Cover is $17 (at least that’s what it said on the website). So, bring money and show up around 9 p.m. (more…)

Black Knots tour pics

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

The guys in Huntington’s Black Knots snapped some pretty cool pics of their recent swing through Cleveland and Detroit. Check ‘em out on their new Detroit 08 photo album on their MySpace profile. Look for them to now go into the studio to record the follow-up to “Hell Bent To Kick It Out” — due out later this year. Maybe…

WEEKEND WATCH: 5.22-24

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Why is thegazz.com’s Weekend Watch series so fun and informative? It’s all part of our grand strategy to clue area rockers into the coolest rock shows going on in any given weekend. If you’re planning on going out to rock, you have to check in with us first. And, it’s way more relevant than other unnamed West Virginia zine schedules (ahem). A trio of cool shows at the Empty Glass in Charleston this weekend, so, read on… (more…)

The Murder Junkies (above) come to Morgantown Thursday and Charleston Friday

So you went out and voted for your favorite local and/or national official for whatever reason. Now, it’s time to do something that also matters: check out the Weekend Watch series in the Gazz to find the most killer local rock shows. Supporting the local economy by going to local shows is good for America, in our opinion.

The “Appalachian Triangle” (Charleston, Huntington, & Morgantown) is loaded with cool shows from ska to punk to rock to to folk and back to reggae. And, the best thing: you don’t have to worry about anyone onstage breaking their populist promises to you. Cringe. Read on… (more…)

VIDEO: Jeff Ellis @ Taylor Books 5.9

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Taking our own advice, we decided to swing by Capitol Street Friday to catch Huntington’s Jeff Ellis for a solo acoustic show at Taylor Books. After working in customer service here at CNP until 7 p.m., I bolted as soon as I was off and met up with Jessica and Mark.

Walking in the door I caught Ellis talking with Huntington Herald-Dispatch writer (and now author) Dave Lavender,  put the ‘ol meet & greet on, and went in to get an espresso. I don’t want any milk or cream or latte or anything — gimme a shot! Maybe with some syrup.

I got to talk to Ellis for a minute, and got an advance copy of his new CD “Covering The Distance.” It’s  a 12-song alt-folk/country effort that, with Bud Carroll on lead and his Southern Souls in tow, is quite impressive, even for a not-so-finished copy. To see them together, as Carroll and crew have recently been backing Ellis at shows, would be a treat.

“Looks like I’m playin’ for the cameras,” Ellis said as he sat down to play as (to start) there were more cameras than people. (more…)

WEEKEND WATCH: 5.8-5.10

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Well, we took some time off to celebrate May Day and Cinco De Mayo. But we here at the Gatecrasher blog are back and fired up about area rock shows. We’re planning on supporting the economy by procuring a couple of cool new local CDs. And, there are some cool shows in Charleston, Huntington and Morgantown, so Hillary and Barack will know where to go to rock if they swing through for baby kissin’. Read on… (more…)
