WEEKEND WATCH: 5.22-24

Why is thegazz.com’s Weekend Watch series so fun and informative? It’s all part of our grand strategy to clue area rockers into the coolest rock shows going on in any given weekend. If you’re planning on going out to rock, you have to check in with us first. And, it’s way more relevant than other unnamed West Virginia zine schedules (ahem). A trio of cool shows at the Empty Glass in Charleston this weekend, so, read on…

THU 5.22

The Big Bad (WV Horror punk) comes to town for a Thursday night special at the Empty Glass with opening act Down Goes Frazier (Huntington punk). $5, 10 p.m.

FRI 5.23
Ripley’s intense rock and rollers Dog Soldier take the stage after Killing Chloe (Middletown, Ohio prog-rock) as they converge on the Glass Friday night. At its best, Killing Chloe has a kind of Deftones-type sound, as we heard on their new CD “Two Years Later.” 10 p.m., $5, should be a rockin show.

Up in Wheeling Friday, Wilderkin will play their last show ever at Yesterday’s Draught House & Stage (1056 Main St.) with Treasure Cat (Morgantown instru-metal) and Lo-Pan (Columbus stoner metal) in their own hometown — the former seat of our great state. Cost is $5, and if you want to see the Northern most Southern rock stylings of Wilderkin, this will be your last chance apparently.

In Morgantown Friday, Big Right Hand (Morgantown hard rock) will do a show at 123 Pleasant St. with Noetic Pull (Martinsburg rock). 123 Pleasant St. seems to book all kinds of cool bands up there, so swing by for this one if you‘re up that way.

SAT 5.24

At the Glass Saturday, Your Favorite Hero (Knoxville power-pop) is rolling through the area, and will rock with Failure Figure (Huntington punk). So if punk is your cup of tea, check this show out. 10 p.m., $5.

At Paradox Rift Saturday night, PI (Ironton alt-rock) will do a show with Huntington’s own Crimson Rising and Unload (Flatwoods, Ky. Alt-metal). Paradox Rift is located at 2127 Manchester Avenue in Huntington. Cover is $5.

Out in Huntington Saturday night, Down Goes Frazier will do a show at Marley’s Doghouse with The Fontaine (”WV softcore” it says on their MySpace page). Cost is $5 for this one, and if you missed your chance to see Down Goes Frazier in Charleston Thursday, this will be your chance out there.
