WEEKEND WATCH: 6.6-6.7
Only one state newspaper has the most up-to-date rock show info each week. Only the Gazz has the Weekend Watch series, which covers Charleston, Huntington and Morgantown like nobody else. If you’re looking for a cool rock show this weekend there are several, so read on…
FRI 6.6
We start in Charleston because that’s where we’re from. And the Empty Glass (410 Elizabeth St.) has a couple of cool shows lined up starting with Cleveland’s cowpunkers Lords of the Highway, coming to town for a gig with West Virginia horror core punk band The Big Bad. We got to catch LOTH at the Glass recently, and were totally into the upright bass and the uptempo punk. Contrary to what you may read on the Glass’ website, however, Huntington’s Black Knots will not be there. Still a cool lineup, so swing by if you’re out. 10 p.m., $6 cover.
The Blue Parrot (14 Capitol St.) in Charleston will host a weekend series with One Hundred Hurricanes (Morgantown powerpop) and Ripley’s Dog Soldier Friday and Saturday night. If you missed your chance to see OHH (formerly The Getaway) last time they came to town, this is your chance. Shows start at 10 p.m., and cover will be in the $5 range.
If you’re out early Friday, you can catch Charleston’s rockin’ three-piece honky tonk trio Buckstone at O’Kays on Leon Sullivan Way, next to the Clay Center, around 9 p.m. There’s no cover, and if you like good food, beer, and tunes you’re in luck.
SAT 6.7
There’s a pretty cool punk show Saturday at The Brickhouse (or, depending on who you’re talking to, The Boom Boom Room) in St. Albans, with Most Ill (Huntington cuss-punk) and We Stand Corrected welcoming The Chodes and Dead From Dancing to town. Of course, it’s an all-ages show, cost is $7, and show starts at 6 p.m.

Bud Carroll and the Southern Souls (Huntington neo-blues) come to Charleston Saturday night for a show at the Glass. We’d here like to run a bit of a correction: We had reported that Carroll’s EP would be released 5.17 at Marley’s Doghouse in Huntington, which turns out was incorrect — the release has been pushed back until next week. Like any news organization, we’re only as good as the information our highly paid confidential insiders give us. No big whoop, though; it just gives us something to look forward to. 10 p.m., $5.
The Redbloods (Huntington indie) will do a Bonnaroo warmup show at Marley’s Doghouse (2050 3rd Ave.) in Huntington Saturday night with Huntington alt-electronica rock acts Attack Flamingo and Poli Technical High. If you’re into catchy tunes, check out The Redbloods’ “Ohio” on their MySpace page. Show starts around 11 p.m., and cover is $5.

Saturday in Morgantown, Treasure Cat (our favorite 3-piece instru-metal act from Morgantown this side of Hovel) will do a show at 123 Pleasant St. with Cleveland’s Hells Fire Sinners. It’s an 18 and over show, and cover will be like $5 or something.
Are you looking for a cool out of the way type show? You’re in luck, as Shadow of a Martyr will hold their CD release show Saturday at Morgan Gym in Clarksburg. The Science Fair Explosion (Clarksburg ska), Count Me In (WV hardcore) and Into The Void (Fairmont metal) will open. Show starts at 6 p.m., and cover is $5.
