WEEKEND WATCH: 6.12-6.14

Thanks to the Weekend Watch series, you don’t have to troll the web searching for information on cool area rock shows to go to. We do that for you, and there is a veritable murderer’s row of shows lined up for Friday the 13th, so let’s go…

THU 6.12

If trippy jam bands are your thing, then swing by The Empty Glass (410 Elizabeth St.) Thursday as Elkins’ prolific outfit Zen comes to town. No, I don’t think they have the time to jam for 24-straight hours like they did a while back — you’ll be back at home by, like, 3 a.m. though. 10 p.m., $5 cover.

FRI 6.13

So it’s Friday the 13th and you’re ready to machete a go-go, right? The Glass has one of the coolest lineups, with Denver’s one-man band The Limbs returning with ‘85 Flood (Morgantown alt-rock), Blue Million (Boone Co. blues/rock) and Slate Dump (Raleigh Co. acoustic rock). Check out ‘85 Flood’s “Ghosts of Cabell County” pumped at thegazz.com’s Soundcheck blog a few months back, and swing by if you’re out. It’s not that scary on the East End after midnight, anyway. Cover is $6.

On the heavily patrolled streets of Capitol Street, Huntington’s power-pop trio Threefold Theory comes to The Blue Parrot (14 Capitol St.) Friday with new experimental-type Charleston outfit Quick and Dirty. There’s footage of Quick and Dirty up at the Pop Cult blog at thegazz.com, so check that out. 10 p.m., $5.

Out in Huntington Friday, there’s a rock & roll cookout at The V Club (741 6th Ave.) Friday, with a few of our favorite bands. Huntington punk bands The Dig-Its and Black Knots welcome horror-core punk rockers The Big Bad for one of the coolest sounding show ideas we’ve heard in a while. The Dig-Its have a new singer (and a new song posted at Castle Brownskull) and the Knots recently got on Boston-based punk label Teenage Heart Records, so that’s cool. The thing starts around 5 p.m., from what we’ve been able to piece together. Bring money and expect to get yer grub on too!

SAT 6.14

Bud Carroll and the Southern Souls (Huntington neo-blues) are set to release their new EP Saturday at Marley’s Doghouse (2050 3rd Ave.) in Huntington. We’re looking forward to hearing this CD, and if you come to the show, simply pay your $8 cover, and you get the CD for free! Free is good, we can afford that.

SUN 6.15

So it’s Sunday and you think all the cool shows are done for the weekend? Wrong! Legendary Rhode Island-based punk rockers The Queers come to Club Echo (1318 4th Ave.) in Huntington for a stop on their nation-wide Asian Man Records Tour. They’ll bring Lemuria (Buffalo, NY punk), Bomb The Music Industry (NY punk), Kepi Ghoulie (CA acoustic punk), and Andrew Jackson Jihad (AZ punk, and an early nominee for best band name of the year) to town for an all-ages show starting at 9 p.m. Check out The Queers’ bio on their MySpace for a good laugh. Cover is $12, but that’s not bad. Swing by if you’re out there.

The Rock & Roll Cookout at the V-Club is happening on Sunday July 13th, not Friday June 13th.
