WEEKEND WATCH: 6.19-22
Rockers around the state are set to fire up the grill to celebrate our fair state’s birthday. Several food-related rock shows are scheduled this weekend, led by The Empty Glass picnic at Coonskin Sunday, and the Weekend Watch series is on ’em like flies on yer food, so let’s go!
THU 6.19
One of our missions is to raise awareness about cool Thursday night shows, of which there are a couple. Huntington power-pop trio Threefold Theory comes to town to rock “Bike Night” at Quaker Steak and Lube (2931 Mountaineer Blvd.) in South Charleston. We make no guarantees about the food but do guarantee 3FT rocks. No cover, so you can apply that to your fries and water. 9 p.m., free!
Also, Bloomington, Indiana-based folk rocker Nathaniel Seer comes to The Empty Glass (410 Elizabeth St.) Thursday night. Maybe the Mountaineer fans at the Glass can treat this Hoosier to a good time, we like those odds. He’s coming through the state as part of his show-a-day tour of the East coast. 10 p.m., cover likely $5.

FRI 6.20
Out in Huntington, Adam Bieniek and the Sound Assassins (Huntington alt-rock) will hold their CD release party at Marley’s Doghouse (2050 3rd Ave.) Friday night. Opening acts are The Salty Sirens (Ashland, Ky. Alt-rock) and Jake Webb. 10 p.m., $5.

Up in Morgantown, The Love Me Knots (Morgantown cowboy roots-rock) and One Foot In the Gravy (Morgantown post-grunge) do a show at 123 Pleasant Street Friday night. Maybe Morgantown is less busy these days, but this is a rockin’ lineup. 10 p.m., like $5 or something.
SAT 6.21
West Virginia’s resident reggae rockers Shayar and Krooshal Force come back to the Glass Saturday night, bringing loads of good vibes we’re sure. If you feel like you’ve been in Babylon too long, get yer tails to this show. 10 p.m., bring money.
At the V Club (741 6th Ave.) in Huntington, they’re having a Summer Solstice “rockout cookout” with Huntington’s atmospheric shoegaze rockers in The Red Velvet Saturday. Maybe they’ll have copies of their new CD “Lights Won’t Go Out” which we advise that you buy.
123 Pleasant St. hosts Morgantown indie rockers It’s Birds, Red Center, and Russian Tombstones Saturday night. Just came across this cool article on Russian Tombstones in the DA; looks like a rockin’ lineup. 10 p.m., cash money.
SUN 6.22
You’ve read about it in the FestivALL special insert section, now hear about it in the Weekend Watch: The Empty Glass cookout at Coonskin Park Sunday features an all-day extravaganza of some of our favorite acts. Starting at noon and running until 10 p.m., the lineup includes (in order) The Spurgie Hankins Band, The Carpenter Ants, The Diablo Blues Band, Huntington’s Jeff Ellis, Charleston’s rockin’ honky tonk trio Buckstone (back from Nashville), Bud Carroll and the Southern Souls (Huntington neo-blues), and headlined by vampire country western troubadour Unknown Hinson. Tickets are $12 in advance (available at the Glass) and $15 the day of the show. And, after the show, Hinson will have a meet and greet at the Glass.

Enjoy your cookouts and go easy with the lighter fluid on that open flame!
