WEEKEND WATCH: 7.25-26
So gas prices are down by 9/10 of a cent, and that means area rockers will be flocking in droves to area venues this weekend to check out some shows. No, you still can’t smoke in the bars, so wear a few nicotine patches or something. The Weekend Watch has the scoop on the coolest rock shows in the state. Don’t just show up at a bar and expect to have the bands you like be there — read The Gazz to get informed, then make a decision.
FRI, July 25:
We’ll start where we so often do, at The Empty Glass (410 Elizabeth St.) in Charleston, where Bud Carroll & the Southern Souls bring their soulful mix of neo-blues and rock to town. The band has just released a strong seven-song EP, but it may be too late to get one. Few area musicians are as talented as Carroll, who can jam all night. 10 p.m., $5.

The Blue Parrot (14 1/2 Capitol St.) hosts Charleston’s Dr. Senator (not Bill Frist), the weird Asheville, North Carolina-based Hellblinki Sextet and The Buttonflies. 10 p.m., $5.
Up in Morgantown, area rockers including Billy Matheny and Aaron Hawley of ‘85 Flood will rock The Blue Moose Cafe on Walnut Street to raise money to help The Mountains People’s Market Co-Op, a locally (and co-operatively) owned market focused on locally grown and produced food. Tired of lead-based cardboard dumplings from China or salmonella-flaked pepper? Show up and support the cause for this decades-old Morgantown institution. Cool raffles and all to raise money, and of course some cool acts. 9 p.m., just $5 cover.

SAT, July 26
Our local music lock o’ the week takes place Saturday night on Charleston’s historic East End. It’s there that Cleveland’s cowpunkers in The Whiskey Daredevils join Hunington’s raucous Black Knots and local horror core punk band The Big Bad at The Empty Glass. If you haven’t had a chance to catch any of these acts in town, or you missed the fire-breathing Knots and The Big Bad at the V Club’s punk rock BBQ a few weeks ago, then take advantage of those low low ga$ prices and swing on by. The Daredevils (back from their European tour) will have some rockin’ Daredevils brand work shirts for sale. Wear your ironic trucker hats and have a bacon martini on them. This show is a can’t miss Weekend Watch special. If you go to one area show this week, make it this one. Don’t know what the cover is, just bring money. Dig through the cushions of your couches if you have to. 10 p.m.
