WEEKEND WATCH: 7.31-8.2

Cleveland-based rockers Coffinberry (above) will rattle The Blue Parrot tonight with Red Bones. 10 p.m., $5
Part of our mission statement for the Weekend Watch series is to clue area readers into cool Thursday night rock shows. You’re checking out The Gazz (dead-tree version or the www kind) wondering if there’s any cool shows tonight (Thursday) and the answer is a big 10-4! And yes, we hated the new X-Files movie. Read on…
THU 7/31
A really cool show is lined up at The Blue Parrot (14 1/2 Capitol St.) tonight, as the Cleveland-based rockers in Coffinberry join their friends (and fans) in Red Bones. Red Bones is made up of former members of one of our all-time favorite Morgantown acts, The Ones That Got Away. Coffinberry is supposed to be killer, from what Derek Thomas (Red Bones drummer) has told us in confidential meetings, and from what we’ve read (and heard) on their MySpace profile, where you can download the song “Write This” off their most recent CD. So, swing by and check these acts out; show starts at 10 p.m., cover is $5.

Sweden invades Charleston Thursday night as The Rockridge Brothers (pictured above) bring their Stockholm-based rockin’ Appalachian folk stylings to The Empty Glass (410 Elizabeth St.) for what we can only assume to be a good time. Who said nothing good ever came out of Sweden? We did, and for that we apologize. 10 p.m., money.
FRI 8/1
Heathen’s in South Charleston (244 1/2 7th Ave.) hosts some hardcore metal acts Friday night, with Louisville’s Stonecutters coming to town for a show with Charleston’s Tomorrow Burns (w/members of Against and Hollow Cause) and Voices of Anatole. A low $3 cover for this show, which should start around 9 p.m.
Charleston-area Latin ensemble Comparsa plays the Glass Friday night. Maybe you need to get your groove back or something — this act should help. Out in Huntington there’s a pretty cool punk show with Sarasota, Down Goes Frazier and Dayton, Ohio’s The Story Changes playing Club Echo (1318 4th Ave.).
Coffinberry travels to Morgantown Friday for a show at 213 Green St. Artspace for a show with ‘85 Flood and Russian Tombstones. J Marinelli recently told us that Russian Tombstones is one of the most rockin’ acts in Magic Town at the moment. We’ll take his word, but you don’t have to. If you’re up that way, swing by for this all-ages show at 7 p.m., cover is just $4.

SAT 8/2
Capitol Street in Charleston features a couple of cool acts Saturday night. First, Huntington singer-songwriter Jeff Ellis will be doing a solo acoustic show at Taylor Books. We got to catch Ellis solo at Taylor back in May, and were duly impressed. We think you’ll be, too. He may have advance copies of his new CD “Covering The Distance” available but that is only speculation on our part. He’ll play from 7-9 p.m., and the best thing is there’s no cover.
Sam’s Uptown Cafe features The Joe Prichard Band Saturday night. We most recently saw Prichard with his bandmate Billy Matheny with Buckstone during FestivALL. That was cool, and this show should be as well if you’re down with the stylings of the former member of The Recipe.
If you’ve been to the Glass you may have heard of Mike Pushkin. Well, the open mic host and Rasta Rafiki member will bring his Mike Pushkin Project into the club Saturday night. Swing by and see if yer down with this kind of vibe. Odds are you will be if you’re a fan of the Glass. Oh yeah, Jah Rules.
