WEEKEND WATCH: 8.21-8.24
As summer dies down and the kids go back to school, one thing that is for sure is that there will be rockin’ area shows in Charleston, Huntington and Morgantown. The Weekend Watch series has ‘em all covered. Plus, there are a few cool reunion shows and a new Irish-themed rock bar opening, so read on to find out where…
THU 8.21
Morgantown’s all-star reggae outfit Rasta Rafiki will reunite Thursday at 123 Pleasant St. in Morgantown. The band did a few reunion shows a few months back, and have a busy weekend ahead of them, just like those WVU students getting back into town. 10 p.m., $10.
FRI 8.22
Rasta Rafiki comes to The Empty Glass (410 Elizabeth St.) in Charleston Friday, with Mike Pushkin and the Lower Case G’s opening. If you know about the Glass you know this should be a good place for this kind of vibe. 10 p.m., bring lots of money, or call 345-9893 for cover info.
Up in Morgantown, there’s a cool show at 123 Friday night with Sandra Black, Librarians, and Fox Japan. Seems like there’s a glut of rockin’ bands up there, and this is one of our picks for the weekend. 10 p.m., cash money.
SAT 8.23
Anytime you combine “Irish” and “bar” you know you’re in for a good time. Well, Shamrock’s Pub in Huntington is holding their Grand Opening Back to School Bash Saturday night with Morgantown’s The Greens. Shamrock’s Pub is actually the former Marley’s Doghouse, located at 2050 3rd Avenue. 9:30 p.m., just $5.
The V Club (741 6th Ave.) in Huntington has a pretty cool “Back to the Grind” party lined up Saturday night, with South Carolina’s Zach Deputy bringing his mix of roots rock and reggae to town. You may have heard about Deputy recently coming to the Glass. Well, now’s yer chance to catch him out there. Its $8 at the door, MU students with ideas (make that an I.D.) get a dollar off, and it’s rightfully an 18 and over show.
There’s a rockin’ show lined up at 123 Pleasant St. Saturday night with 63 Eyes, Todd Burge and, and Vienna, W.Va.-based rocker Joseph Henry. 10 p.m., cash money. In Wheeling, Morgantown acts Russian Tombstones, Fox Japan & It’s Birds convene on Yesterday’s Draught House & Stage (1056 Main St.) for a cool show.
SUN 8.24
Picnics are always good, especially when there are a ton of cool rock bands there, some of which you never get to see. The Empty Glass concert series at Coonskin Amphitheater continues Sunday afternoon with Charleston area alt-rockers Noizbox reuniting. They’ll be joined by Orlando (via Charleston) based ska band 69 Fingers, The Concept (Charleston hero punk), The Big Bad (WV horror punk) and Charleston-based psychobilly band The Heptanes are “back from the dead” for a rare local show. Hosted by area rappers Meuwl and B-Rude, tickets are $10 if yer an adult, $5 for those 16 and under, show starts at 4 p.m. This show is our Weekend Watch “lock of the week” — if only X-Fest had as cool a lineup.
