WEEKEND WATCH: 10.17-10.18

Whether you’re in Charleston, Huntington, or Morgantown, there are several cool rock shows lined up. Plus one abomination in the form of a rock band the likes of which ye could have only dreamt about. Read on…

FRI 10.17: We’ll start where we so often do (since we’re in Charleston) — at The Empty Glass, where Huntington-based jam band Luke Jivetalker comes to town. Cool name, cool sound, cool venue. It all adds up. 10 p.m., bring money.

Out in Huntington, something calling itself “Beatallica” joins our friends in The Dig-Its (Huntington punk) and The Bible Beaters (Portsmouth OH punk) at Club Echo. Beatallica is, as you may have surmised, some kind of a Beatles-Metallica tribute band from what we’ve pieced together, with four metal heads with long hair sporting the Sgt. Peppers outfits. Just when you think you’ve seen it all. Club Echo is located at 1318 4th Avenue, show starts at 10 p.m., and cover is $10.

123 Pleasant Street in Morgantown celebrates their 10-year anniversary Friday night with a who’s who of killer Magic Town acts. J Marinelli returns from Lexington, Ky. to join Librarians and One Hundred Hurricanes to help rock the occasion. One Hundred Hurricanes just finished work on a new CD and oh, have we mentioned that J Marinelli is waaay more D.I.Y. than your band? No venue in the state has helped more charitable causes than 123, so kudos to them and the rockers who’ve helped make it happen up there. 10 p.m., $10.

SAT 10.18

Charleston’s resident punk rock heroes in The Concept welcome Ky.-based pop punk act The Underdogs to The Blue Parrot Saturday night. The Concept has rounded out their sound recently with the addition of guitarist Bryan Flowers, and has been doing a lot of shows. We plan on showing up with our bodyguard, Pacman Jones, and our designated driver, Tom McGee. 10 p.m., Ameros.

That dancin’ outlaw that Tom Arnold and Rosanne Barr helped make famous (infamous?) known as Jesco White returns to town for a show at The Empty Glass with J. Hill. Expect to pay like $10 for this one.

The Redbloods, one of our favorite new bands out of Huntington, are set to bring their quirky-yet-powerful version of rock to Shamrock’s Irish Pub in Huntington Saturday night. Shamrock’s is the former Marley’s Doghouse, located at 2050 3rd Avenue; 10 p.m., cash money.

There are several cool shows up in Morgantown Saturday night, starting with several brand spanking new Magic Town acts at 213 Green Street Artspace. Russian Tombstones, Landmine, Rifle Camp, and Panda and Child come together to rock this most alternative of venues. 6:30 p.m., $4 special. Hear a special bootleg recording of J Marinelli’s “Honey Where You Been?” on Rifle Camp’s MySpace page. It rocks.

Later on, the instru-metal three-piece act Treasure Cat will be joined by Charleston psychobilly act The Heptanes at 123 Pleasant St. Treasure Cat is one of our faves, and we’d just caught The Heptanes recently, so this is gonna be a good one. 10 p.m., bring money.
