WEEKEND WATCH: 11.6-11.8

Well, the election has came and passed, and America is still here. Awesome. Now it’s time for area rockers to take to the streets for killer rock shows this weekend. Don’t worry about stray gunfire or broken bottles over yer cranium; there are some great local acts out there all over the state this weekend.

THU 11.6
The “ladies” will be able to get their freak on at The Empty Glass, as Huntington’s Jeff Ellis returns to Charleston’s historic East End for ladies night. If you haven’t heard about Ellis yet, it means you haven’t been reading the Gazz at all recently, so bone up in that department. Ladies get in free, so you know what that means — fellas, dress up in drag and pay no cover! 10 p.m., bring money for beverages.

FRI 11.7
Looks like our punk rock friends in The Concept have an all-ages show booked at The LaBelle Theater (311 D St.) in South Charleston Friday evening. The LaBelle is one of the nicest venues around, and even though they don’t serve your favorite legal beverages, there are plenty of seats to park your keester in. Team Concept also has a benefit show booked Sunday, from what we’ve heard; ask ‘em about it at the show. Also, ask their bassist Dave where my J Marinelli CD is! 6 p.m., $5.

Charleston area rock bands Ten Carp Lie and Civil State do another show at The Blue Parrot Friday night. We’re pretty sure that TCL and/or Civil State was on thegazz.com’s Radio Free Charleston recently, so check that out to get a taste. 10 p.m., $5, keep your heads down on Capitol Street.

The Glass hosts Seattle-based hip hop act Eastern Sunz with area hip hop rabble rousers Meuwl and B-Rude Friday. Polish those rims and grills and flash that bling, and expect to keep it more real than the next guy. 10 p.m., cover.

SAT 11.8
The Glass hosts Maryland’s Jubal Kane Blues Band Saturday night for what will likely be a very nice vibe. Not only can you check out Kane online at MySpace, the Glass MySpace has some live tracks of Kane from a recent show there for yer listening pleasure (last time we checked). 10 p.m., Iraqi Dinars.

The Parrot hosts Dog Soldier and Doctor Senator Saturday night. If you ever wanted to start a street vending business, selling hot dogs or novelty cigarettes, you could retire early after setting up shop on Capitol Street with all the intoxicated smokers relegated to the streets due to the smoking ban. 10 p.m., cover.

Out in Huntington there are some very cool shows Saturday night. Bud Carroll and the Southern Souls play their first show with their new keyboardist, Jon Cavendish, at The V Club. We’ve always thought the band needed that, after hearing their recently released EP; it should round out their sound nicely. Seattle’s Lonely H will also be there, so yeah, it’s a good one. 10 p.m., bring money. The V Club is located at 741 6th Ave.

The Greens (Morgantown Appalachian neo-soul boogaloo) comes to Shamrock’s Pub on 3rd Avenue in Huntington Saturday. Green + green (Irish) + green (cash) = a good time here. 9 p.m., $5

Let’s say you’re in Morgantown for some unknown reason. Well, the Weekend Watch has it covered. West Virginia University’s radio station U92 will hold their ‘zine release party at 123 Pleasant Street with special rock and roll guests One Hundred Hurricanes. OHH is set to release a new CD soon, from what we’re told, so look for that and the new zine from U92, which does a lot of cool stuff up there. 10 p.m., bring all the money you can.

The Love Me Knots will be joined by one of our favorites, Billy Matheny, for a show at Gibbie’s Pub in Morgantown Saturday night. If we had something like a “fave five” Matheny just might have a spot in it, so swing by if yer up that way. Gibbie’s is located at 368 High St., and cover is just $5.

Make your voice heard; inbetween songs, yell something like “PLAY SOME SKYNYRD!!!”
