WEEKEND WATCH: 11.20-11.23
There’s no shortage of cool rock shows lined up this weekend, and the Weekend Watch has ‘em covered. Whether you’re in Charleston, Huntington, or up in Morgantown, you’ll know where to go, so read on…
THU 11.20
So you’re reading the print Gazz Thursday, and you’re up in Morgantown, and you’re looking for a rock show. Well, you’re in luck, friend, because Shepherdstown’s resident rockers in The Demon Beat come to 123 Pleasant Street with Morgantown’s Russian Tombstones and Librarians. Should be a good one, show starts at 10 p.m. Call 292-0800 forcover.
FRI 11.21
So, you live in Charleston, not Morgantown? You’re in luck as well, because The Empty Glass is hosting a weekend’s worth of rock shows that could be their best all year. Bud Carroll & the Southern Souls bring their bluesy version of rock and roll to town Friday for a show with Charleston’s Scrap Iron Pickers. The Souls just added Jon Cavendish on keyboards, which should add a lot to their live sound, getting closer to the sound on their EP. Show should start around 10 p.m. Empty Glass covers are usually $5 to $8, but call 345-9893 in advance if you are counting your shekels.
Out in Huntington, Larry Keel and Natural Bridge plays The V Club with Syracuse, Indiana’s Goldmine Pickers. Keel’s flatpicking skills approach near legendary status, and if you haven’t had a chance to catch him and you’re out that way, swing by. Cover is $10 at the door, and show starts at 10 p.m. Call 781-0680. ( Check out a cool article on Keel by Dave Lavender in the Huntington Herald-Dispatch here)
SAT 11.22
Sometimes, it’s good to be subjective. Cleveland’s Whiskey Daredevils, one of our favorite bands, is scheduled to bring their no-frills rockabilly to The Empty Glass Saturday night for a show with Charleston’s Heptanes. We missed the Daredevils the last time they were scheduled to come to the Glass for a show with Huntington’s Black Knots, as they had to cancel. Hopefully they make it down this time, and no, sorry, they’re all out of ironic trucker hats, from what we’re told. 10 p.m., money.
The Demon Beat continue their mini-tour Saturday night in Huntington with a stop at Shamrock’s Irish Pub for a show with The Redbloods. The Redbloods have been busy recording new material, so they’ll be ready. These two bands fit perfectly together; should be a rockin’ show. 10 p.m. Cover is $5.

SUN 11.23
There are a few cool Sunday shows this weekend, starting with a cool punk show in Morgantown. The Toasters (NYC punk) and Flatfoot 56 (Chicago Celtic punk) play 123 Pleasant St. with Morgantown’s Celtic punk rockers The Gentlemen and Clarksburg’s insane ska band, Cryptorchid Chipmunk. It’s a special all-ages show, scheduled to start around 6 p.m., and cover is $12 at the door, which, for these bands, ain’t bad.
The Demon Beat swings through Charleston Sunday night for a stop at the Glass with Russian Tombstones and The Concept (Charleston hero punk). From what we’ve been told, The Concept has new material and Charleston, this is a rare opportunity to catch two bands from far-flung areas that are generating a lot of buzz; The Demon Beat and Russian Tombstones quite likely won’t be back anytime soon, so get to this one if you can. 10 p.m., cash money for the cover.
