WW: NYE edition!

So yeah, New Year’s Eve is on a Wednesday night this year, so we’re jumping the gun on this “special” edition of the Weekend Watch. If your New Year’s resolution is to catch more area rock bands, you can start one day early. There are rockin’ shows lined up in what we call “the big three” — Charleston, Huntington and Morgantown, so if you’re as sick of Dick Clark as we are, maybe this post will help.

CHARLESTON

The Empty Glass features our punk rock friends in The Concept, area horror-core punk rockers The Big Bad, local rappers The Rabble Rousers (Meuwl and B-Rude) and Corporate Orange for their NYE show. A nice lineup, and if you don’t know, the Glass is located at 410 Elizabeth Street on Charleston’s historic East End, and you can call ‘em at 345-9893 to check on any cover info.

HUNTINGTON

We do know that, this year, Huntington has no fewer than three great NYE rock shows to ring in 2009. First, you have Bud Carroll and the Southern Souls at The V Club with The Yetti (Beckley funk) and Fletcher’s Grove. Show starts around 8 p.m., and cover is $10. Oh, The V is located at 741 6th Avenue, and you can call them at 781-0680.

The Red Velvet and Sarasota, two of our favorite bands of ‘08 (not that anyone cares) is at Club Echo. If catchy, powerful, well-written atmospheric rock songs are your thing, The Red Velvet will be for you. If you’re more into melodic punk rock with just enough attitude, the four-piece that is Sarasota will impress. Two of our favorite CDs of ‘08 came from these bands, so pick ‘em both up if you have the opportunity. Club Echo is located at 1318 4th Avenue, and if you show up around 8 or 9 p.m., you should be fine.

Huntington indie rockers The Redbloods and Ashland, Kentucky’s funk act Genuine Junk Band are at Shamrock’s Irish Pub, located at 2050 3rd Avenue in, yes, Huntington.

MORGANTOWN

Ohh, what an age we live in; someone has invented a cheap, effective teleportation device that will beam us up to Morgantown to catch J Marinelli with Magic Town bands One Hundred Hurricanes and Lake And Ocean at 123 Pleasant Street. You may have missed Marinelli at 213 Green Street Saturday; this is your last chance to catch him up that way, as he’ll head back to Lexington. And good deal on the technology thing, too. 10 p.m., bring money, but call 292-0800 for more info; if you need to fax anything, that number is 292-2700.
