Karin, you are a wonderful owner! www.scwtca.org has a great area on grooming which should help. I just use straight and thinning scissors to trim my wheatens....I bet Murry would like scissors instead of clippers. Hope this helps.

He usually is mat-free when he goes to the groomer, except for his collar area, but there's just something about the buzzing sound of the clippers that sends him over the edge. We've been trying to leave a home clipper running some to get him accustomed to the sound, but when he hears it, he disappears and won't come out until it's off. I'm toying around with trying it myself since he really is better when it's me behind the shears, but I don't have a clue what I'm doing.

I didn't realize Wheatens were sensitive to tranquilizers. OK, well that's not going to happen again. Can't risk anything happening to my guy.

Sounds like Murry was traumatized by a groomer who did not know what they were doing. I would try brushing and combing him everyday for very short periods of time with lots of treats, make it fun... like a party. It helps so much to take a dog to the groomer mat free, unfortunatly....alot more work for you. I think tranquilizers are dangerous to use with wheatens as they are so sensitive to drugs. I wish I were closer so I could help. Murry is a gorgeous boy and I know he could not have a better home than with you and your family!!!

I'm not sure why some get the red x (which I get when I log on from home) but others can see it. Click on where it says Dog A Day and it should go to her blog, although you'll have to scroll down until 3/24 to see Murry.

Carolyn -- How cool to see you posting on here all the way from Texas! Murry is still the most wonderful, most loyal dog ever. He'd be at my side 24 hours a day if he could. A few weeks back when I was up sick all night, he stood right there next to me the whole time. It was like he wouldn't allow himself to sit or lie down because he might fall asleep, so he kept standing to make sure I was ok. My only problem with him is grooming. He's absolutely terrified of getting groomed even if I'm standing right there with him the whole time AND he's doped up on tranquilizers. They end up doing little more than shaving him, which looks awful. He's gorgeous right now with his long curls. I've never seen a better looking Wheaten. His colors are perfect.
