For those who love a good sale
Thought I’d pass the word about this great HALF PRICE SALE they’re having the entire month of August at the Charleston/Kanawha County Humane Society.
Wilson Martino Dental Associates will cover half the adoption fee of EVERY animal ad
opted during August. I love this idea!
If I could add another dog to our household (which I can’t–two dogs are the limit in South Charleston), I’d be tempted to go after “Big Dog,” who is at the Charleston shelter right now. I love German shepherds. Just look at this face–you can see her intelligence and the dignity she’s trying to maintain. Her profile says she’s a three-year-old spayed female that is housebroken, good with children, and knows several commands. She was turned in by her owner on July 25. (It doesn’t say why.) I don’t know how long they keep dogs there, but I hope she’ll have enough time to find a home.

And this cat, Milo, has been there since June 23. He’s NINE YEARS OLD. How sad that his owner could simply walk away from his obviously well-fed cat after so many years! Does he even stand a chance at getting adopted? It says he’s declawed on front and “owner couldn’t keep.”
He looks something like my Squirt, who tips the scale at about 20 lbs and is my No. 1 (of 3) cats. We already have a delicate balance going on at our house between the two males, so there’s no way I could add another, but I look at that face and wish I could take him home and allow him to finish off the second half of his life in a safe and comfortable manner.
I get so much from my animals. Yes, they can be messy and expensive and destructive at times, but they must be doing something right or I wouldn’t be sitting here wishing I could have even more.

Ahh! That is kind of freaking — that Milo looks almost identical to my sister’s Milo (though hers is a rescue cat, so I hope this one has use of his back legs and working kidneys.)
I digress, though. I think it’s fantastic what they’re doing this month. My parents are at their limit (5 dogs) and I, unfortunately, am only allowed by my landlord to have one.
I have proposed before to both the KC and Putnam Co. shelters another half price option — I think they should alway offer discounted adoptions on their “senior” pets. I know a lot of people won’t adopt a dog that’s 10 or older because they think it might die soon and so they don’t want to spend the money. I think if they would offer a lower adoption fee for the senior dogs, more of them might get adopted instead of having to be put to sleep.

That’s a wonderful idea about having a discount on older pets! You’ve proposed this to them before?
When I got Gypsy from the shelter, she was four or five years old, declawed and already spayed with all her shots, but she cost the same as a kitten that would have to be fixed and vaccinated before being adopted. It seemed crazy to me at the time, but I’d kind of forgotten about that since then.
This Milo cat–his face just kills me. He should be sleeping in a sunny window somewhere, dreaming about lasagna.

Oops. I just looked at my post. I meant “freaky” not “freaking” in regards to the twin Milos.
I had emailed them about the senior pets idea last year or year before last. I should try again and call or write them a letter this time. I see it on PetFinder.com, too — people wanting a $75-$100 adoption fee for all their pets, and I see these senior dogs — some of which have special needs, too — and it breaks my heart knowing that they probably won’t ever get adopted.

Hi Karin, I am one of your faithful readers and a neighbor on Evergreen Cr., the brick rancher right next to Kevin Cheshire.
I am at work and when I saw this sheperd I just burst into tears and had to go to the restroom. We had to put our sheperd down right before we moved here and he was truly my soulmate. Our little mixed spaniel/lapso apso had to be put down a year ago in July. I so wanted another sheperd but couldn’t find one, but we came upon a little Jack Russell at the shelter that won our hearts. She had been there about 6 weeks and her time was running out. Although she is small, she is a fighter and does not take to other dogs, otherwise I would most definitely adopt this one who would probably have worked out better. Please tell me she was adopted and hopefully not chained outside, but you probably don’t know.
This wasn’t a good day to read your blog because I so wanted to see the pictures of your kitchen and not a homeless german sheperd that probably doesn’t have a happy ending!
