Dog swim time is approaching!
Starting August 16, Cato Park will once again go to the dogs!
Special dog swim events will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on August 16 and 17, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. August 19. There will also be a dog and owner half-mile hike at 10 a.m. August 18 on the Garrison Trail located in the park. All hikers will meet in front of the Cato Park offices to hike. The dog swim will follow immediately.
There will be a contest to see which dog can make the longest jump into the pool at 3 p.m. August 19. Prizes will be awarded to winners in each size category. Doggie bags and treats will provided to all swim participants.
There is no registration fee for this event, but donations of dog food and supplies will be accepted and given to the Kanawha/Charleston Animal Shelter.
Dogs must be well socialized, and owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs.
For more information, contact the parks department at 348-8008 or email rachel.pett@cityofcharleston.org.

Karin:
I took my 3 year old lab last year and found out I have a “water dog” that hates the water. Have you ever tried to get an 85 pound dog in to the water when she’s decided she’s not going? I finally carried her in … big mistake, she promply swam right over me, dunking me in the process.
Maggie and I will be back this year!

This is a neat thing to do! And for the previous comment, I didn’t know that there were “water dogs” that hate the water. I have two labs, and I can’t keep them away from the water. My chocolate lab likes to climb the ladder to get in my mom’s above ground pool. It is really funny!!

My dogs both love to wade, but neither is crazy about swimming. Still, neither is a breed known for being a water dog. I’m not actually sure what kind of dogs they are. Their specialty seems to involve pillows and sleep. Both are experts at making themselves comfortable.
I’ve never seen a lab that didn’t like water!
