AUDIO: Poet Salvatore Buttaci reads “Thunder in the Hollow”

sal_b.jpgWidely published poet and teacher Savatore Buttaci of Princeton, W.Va., called in a poem titled “Thunder in the Hollow”…. Thanks! Dear listeners, I encourage you to Google his name sometime and read more of his work. Part of his bio mentions that he is the former editor of New Worlds Unlimited, and of Poetidings, the newsletter of the New Jersey Poetry Society, Inc. He has written several books, including “Promising the Moon” and “A Family of Sicilians: Stories and Poems.” Pudding House Publications put his chapbook, “Greatest Hits: 1970-2000,” in their American Poets series.
Buttaci says his wife is from McDowell County, W.Va., and when he retired from teaching college in New Jersey last summer, the move to West Virginia was natural. He loves West Virginia.

Dear Vic,

It was good speaking with you this morning. And I thank you for putting me and my poem up on your MountainWord site. Whenever you want to interview me at greater length, let me know. I would like that very much as I try to settle in here in West Virginia, seeking out poetry venues. In New Jersey where we last lived, I gave readings and workshops at least once a week to libraries and coffeehouses and on cable TV. I miss that.

By the way, my latest book is called “A Dusting of Star Fall: Love Poems.” Anyone interested can contact me for details.

The new year started off with the announcement from India that a poem of mine had won First Place ($500.00) in their Taj Mahal Review Contest. I was ecstatic, even though that large a prize has been awarded to me twice previously. I get as excited seeing my work published now as I did back in 1957 when it all began with an essay I wrote for The Sunday New York News which they published when I was just 16. That was fifty years ago!

Enjoy the day. Keep in touch.

That’s wonderful! Thank you for sharing!

Sal, the imagery created by your poem reminds me of a real experience I had of being deeply asleep and the lightning that struck our neighbor’s house made a loud clap of thunder. It worked its way into my dream (it was a psychic dream) and the loud noise woke me up.

Well done, Sal. Well written and well spoken. It is nice to be able to put a voice with a face and with your wonderful poems.
