EVENTS: McKinney reading at Kent State; Poetry Out Loud WV finals coming up too

Wick Poetry Center features W.Va. Poet Laureate Irene McKinney — 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 4, 2008, Room 306, Kent State Student Center, Kent, Ohio. Another marvelous poet, Maggie Anderson, is coordinator of the Wick Poetry Center and teaches at Kent State. Both WVU graduates, Anderson and McKinney go way back to the days of Trellis in the 1970s with my friend and teacher, poet Winston Fuller of Morgantown, W.Va.

McKinney also will be the guest speaker at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 15, 2008, at the the West Virginia State Finals of the Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest in the Norman L. Fagan West Virginia State Theater of the poetryoutloud.jpgCultural Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The state final competition round is free and the public is encouraged to come support the student contestants from many high schools around the state. Poet William F. DeVault, performance professional Jamie Dunbar, and poet, author, and professor John McKernan will serve as judges. Beckley native Chris Sarandon will emcee.
