REBROADCAST: Hear “Kettle Bottom” again on May 22
Kate Long tells me West Virginia Public Broadcasting plans to rebroadcast “Kettle Bottom” on Tuesday, May 22, 2008. Check for times at West Virginia Public Broadcasting online. I loved what I heard of the “Kettle Bottom” special, in between deadlines on the news desk … I’ve yet to hear it all, but the resonance of voices in Long’s presentation is very effective.
The program, of course, is based on Diane Gilliam Fisher’s jewel of a poetry book, “Kettle Bottom.”
Fisher gives us the homespun details of Mingo County coal camp life, 1920; Long’s special program brings to life these historic voices.

I was one of three people at a writing workshop Saturday in Malden, W.Va. Norman Jordan gave me a brief tour of the museum before we got started and after we finished with the poems. Jordan told me many stories, including how his grandfather William Harvey Jordan lost his legs at age 22 in a job-related accident, recovered and reinvented himself as a photographer in Cleveland, Ohio. Many of his portraits hang in homes around the country.
The poetry workshop will meet again on Saturday, May 10, 2008. If you plan on making the trip, let me know. Maybe we could carpool. It’s not far, but gasoline is out of sight these days!
