de.jpgDavis & Elkins presents its 11th Annual Spring Writers’ Week starting today through Friday. Poetry readings, writing workshops and music will include poet John Hoppenthaler with a poetry-writing workshop at 4 p.m. today and a public poetry reading at 7 p.m. today in the Booth Library Community Room.

Writer Colleen Anderson will lead a writing workshop at 4 p.m., Thursday, April 17, in the Booth Library.

The group Public Outcry, comprised of performance artists Jessie Lynne Keltner, Kate Larken, Anne Shelby, George Ella Lyon, Jason Howard, and Silas House, will perform Friday evening, April 18, at 8 p.m. in Harper-McNeely Auditorium.

This year’s Writers’ Week blends poetry, music, ethics and environmental science to focus on the interplay of culture, ecology, economics, politics and identity.

“As always,” say Writers’ Week organizers D&E Associate English Professors Bill King and Peter Okun, “the goal of Writers’ Week at D&E is to raise awareness about — and celebrate — the natural and human environments of Appalachia. By combining literary and musical genres, and academic disciplines (English and Environmental Science), we hope to broaden our audience base as we combine academic disciplines. The four-day event features classroom visits, a free poetry reading, a free fiction reading, and a free-spoken word and musical performance, all on the campus of Davis & Elkins College.”

All events are free and open to the public. For more information about the events and the people involved, contact Davis & Elkins College at (304) 637-1230 or visit www.davisandelkins.edu.
