EVENT: Biggest poetry festival in the East
The Fifth Annual Sarah Lawrence College Poetry Festival takes place next weekend, April 25-27, 2008. It is said to be the largest free poetry festival in the Eastern United States.
With gasoline approaching $4 a gallon, it would cost a lot to get to 1 Mead Way, Bronxville, NY … another reason to plan more events around here.
Emerging and famous poets and teachers blend together at Sarah Lawrence for events ranging from day and night poetry readings, open mic readings, receptions, concerts and more. Here’s a link for information.
Some of the famous names I see on the schedule include: freestyle rapper Sage Francis, Pushcart winner and University of Pittsburgh English Professor Lynn Emanuel, Associate Professor at Virginia Tech and prize-winning poet Bob Hicok, the legendary Sonia Sanchez and others.
One must plan way in advance to be on the program in this sort of event, so keep your eyes peeled this fall for such possibilities if you’re interested. Submissions for this festival were accepted last fall.
This festival is right up there in quality with the best festivals …. I think of the Sotto Voce Poetry Festival in Shepherdstown, W.Va. — smaller yes, but ambitious — coming up in September, which I have mentioned before.
Organized by a volunteer committee of students, the Sarah Lawrence festival is free and open to the public.
