THE ART OF POETRY

Some say poetry is the center of the moment, compressed. A way of looking at the world. Words of iron, butterfly words. Poetry can be both terrifying, comforting. Saying the unsayable.

What do you think it is?

Does knowing what poetry is help us write better poems? I don’t know. Most of the time, we seem to be so unaware of what we’re doing, as if we are sleepwalking through life. The poet says, “Wake up!”

Leonard Cohen said, “Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash.”

“A poet’s work is to name the unnameable, to point at frauds, to take sides, start arguments, shape the world, and stop it going to sleep.” — Salman Rushdie

Blogs give you a chance to join in, so I’m asking a question today. What is poetry? What is it to you? What do you think poetry is?
