WHAT TRIGGERS A POEM
What triggers a poem is a pretty big topic, so I’ll take it in bits and return to it from time to time. Sometimes what triggers a poem might be a story about some social issue I care deeply about. It’ll start me ruminating, dreaming. Sometimes, it’ll start me doing something concrete or just noticing where I am in the now.
One story today struck my attention.
See if you can make a poem out of that. Add it here on the comments, send it to me by e-mail, or if you have video capability send a short video clip to me at

Looking forward to hearing from you.

from Morgantown Poets:
Tha.Speakeasy spoken word event Nov. 18
Spoken word is a poetic art form, and Tha.Speakeasy is its platform. Poets can tell their tells of woe, triumphs and their observations of the basic human condition onstage for prizes.
Tha.Speakeasy is 6-9 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 18, at The Taylor Morgan Restaurant and Club Octane, 218 Walnut St., downtown Morgantown.
It is not a traditional slam, where the poems are timed, or have a theme. It’s a free-flowing event where the sign-up sheet will be at the door.
The event is free and open to the public.
Tha.Speakeasy is an event that started in July 2006, and it continued for a couple of years. Back by popular demand, Tamara Woods, creator of the event, hopes people will have some of the old enthusism with new faces there.
“Spoken word has a way of speaking to the soul,” said Woods. “This is a time where many people have ideas, feelings, random musings ready to burst out of them. What better venue than an intimate setting on stage?”
Woods is also the co-organzier of the Morgantown Poets and feels that Morgantown has many writers waiting to be heard. She urges them to come out for this event.
There will be two or three rounds of competition, depending on how many poets attend.
The winner will be decided by either rounds of applause or a panel of judges. The winner will receive prizes donated from local businesses.
This is being planned as a regular event at the Taylor Morgan Restaurant and Delicatessen/Club Octane. Operating hours are Monday-Friday noon to 2 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday 5 p.m.-2 a.m. The building is a restored vaudeville theater featuring a delicatessen, bar and art gallery.
Bob Lightner, owner of Club Octane is an avid supporter of the arts and is looking forward to seeing this and similar events become a larger part of the entertainment lineup.
Following Tha.Speakeasy, the fun will continue with Wednesday Comedy Night.
