carbidebuilding333_closeup.jpgEmpty, gaunt buildings are always a fascination. The many ghosts of a building’s past lives flutter about in the wind-whipped spaces. This old Carbide building in South Charleston has been stripped to the bricks before its upcoming demolition later this month.  Meanwhile, a visitor can get several angles on the building’s last stand in its final days.

To all us former Carbiders this is known as Building 82. It, along with the water tower at the Tech Center (re-named the “Tech Park” by DOW) were both area landmarks. As we all know, the tower is already gone. It will be sad to see “82″ go.

When is the implosion set to take place?

About the first of February, we hear here. But no specific date as of yet. Thanks for the info, Mike! Doug

I had heard that it was scheduled for January 11 (this Sunday), but a friend told me yesterday that it had been pushed back and he hadn’t heard a firm date, either. I’ll let you know if I hear anything.

The last update I read said the implosion was set for Jan. 24th. There’s a contractor’s website where I last got my info.

I think it is pretty cool when they demolish huge buildings like this, you can feel it like an earthquake. Hope the ghosts don’t haunt them for taking it down. lol
