Kid quits school to play ‘Guitar Hero’

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Hey, I love gaming as much as the next person. I’m happy that my kids have taken an interest in gaming, as well.

But letting one of my kids drop out of high school to pursue a “Guitar Hero” career? They’re only three right now, but I’ll go out on a limb and say it’s not going to happen.

Review: ‘NCAA Football 09′

Like a team putting on the pads for the first practice of the season, “NCAA Football 09″ makes its share of mistakes, but it’s hard to ignore the potential that lies beneath the rough exterior.

Sony, E3 and other stuff

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

Sorry for the delay, but it took a while to find time to sit down and watch Sony’s presentation from last week’s E3. Plus after watching the yawn-fest that was Nintendo’s show (no “Mario”+ no “Zelda” = no interest),  I wasn’t really in the mood to hear more about “casual gaming.”

Thankfully, neither was Sony.

Xbox 360 owners have been waiting more than eight months to experience Epic’s latest fragfest, “Unreal Tournament III.” Now that Midway has delivered the fast-paced shooter to Microsoft’s next-gen console, one question remains — was “UT3″ worth the wait?

You bet it was.

Well, that was certainly . . . interesting.

Nintendo just wrapped up its E3 press briefing and to call it underwhelming would be an understatement.

‘NCAA 09′ available now

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Today’s the day college football videogame fans have been waiting for — the release of EA Sports’ “NCAA Football 09.”

I haven’t had a chance to pick up my copy yet, but I plan to later today.  I’m pretty stoked about this year’s offering and if the early reviews and impressions are any indication, “NCAA 09″ looks to be a major improvement from last year’s game.

I’ll have a review up soon, but if you’ve already scored your copy, what do you think about “NCAA 09″? Feel free to post your feelings about the game in the comments section below.

Microsoft E3 presentation recap

Monday, July 14th, 2008

This week’s Electronics Entertainment Expo (E3) kicked off today with a briefing by Microsoft.

As expected, demos were shown for “Gears of War 2,” “Fable 2″ and “Resident Evil 5,” but the big news from the press conference were two previously unannounced bombshells — “Final Fantasy XIII” is coming to the Xbox 360 and the console is getting a new avatar-driven Dashboard interface.

Microsoft execs also spent plenty of time touting new casual titles for the console, like “UNO Rush” and “You’re in the Movies” and new Xbox Live partnerships with NBC, Universal and Netflix. Subscribers of the DVD rental service who are also Xbox Live members can stream movies from their Netflix Watch Now queue through their Xbox 360.

Check back tomorrow for a recap of Nintendo’s press event.

Countdown to kickoff: Days 5-6

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

If you’re like me, you have to wait until Tuesday to pick up your copy of “NCAA 09.” But others out there have been more fortunate. They were able to find the game early — and they’re giving their impressions.

You can check some of them out here, but we warned — reading this could spoil (or downright ruin) your experience when you play the game for yourself.

Countdown to kickoff: Day 3

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Playing “NCAA Football 2009″ with default rosters is fine. But if you want the true “NCAA” experience, you need to replace those numbers with the names of the players they represent. Which brings us to today’s topic — roster sharing.
