We kick off this Valentine’s week with an image that doesn’t really have anything to do with the holiday, sorry.  This is a digitally-assaulted photograph of the Union Building, taken on a late summer’s day back in 2005, and re-assaulted yesterday afternoon.  It’s part of my “pop-art Charleston” series of digitally-assaulted photographs that I might get around to finishing one of these days.

My buddy Craig Wichman and his Quicksilver Radio Theater is producing a new Radio Drama, “Lincoln’s Last Day,” which you can listen to starting Thusday afternoon right here.    Podcasts will be available after the initial airing.  This is just in time to observe the birthday of our sixteenth president.  Craig and Quicksilver were responsible for the cool radio adaptation of Frankenstein that I linked to a couple of Halloweens ago.  Help keep radio drama alive.  Listen to the streaming broadcast, or download the podcast version.  And DON’T SPOIL THE ENDING!

“I Hate Your God,” seen in episode 14 of Radio Free Charleston,  is one of the more potentially controversial songs we’ve brought you on Radio Free Charleston, but it’s also a killer tune that doesn’t sound like anything else we’ve featured.  I first heard of Fanatomy via MySpace, and got in touch with their head honcho, Murdok Hyde.   We cooked up the idea of shooting a lip-synced video since gathering the entire band at LiveMix Studio would have been a huge undertaking.

You can watch it now! I’m going to spread the production notes over the next several days, so get ready to hear all about the deep dark dirty secrets of how we made the show. 

Today I’m going to tell you about Go Van Gogh.  GVG was one of the top bands that I played back on the old radio version of RFC.  Go Van Gogh was Stephen Beckner (who has been on episodes two and nine of the new RFC), his brother Mark, and Johnny and Tim Rock.  They brought a wild sound to Charleston, with a combination of pure Beatlesque pop married to L.A. punk roots.

Remember back in the summer when everything was sunny, green and warm?  Today’s Monday Morning Art is a digitally-assaulted photograph of Davis Square, in all its late-June glory. Sorta makes you forget the wind tearing through you and freezing your kidneys this morning, don’t it?

This episode features a classic video from Go Van Gogh, performing “Shut Up, I Love You,” which was the most-requested song on the radio version of RFC, back in the Mesozoic era.  We also have the brand-new video for the Fanatomy song “I Hate Your God.”  It’s a great song that you’ll be singing around the office, which could be a problem if you work at a church.

In anticipation of episode 14 of Radio Free Charleston, which goes live on Monday with music from Fanatomy and Go Van Gogh, as well as the short film “Marvel Jackass” and part one of an epic Pentagram Flowerbox, we present Go Van Gogh performing a different song.  This video was shot by me in 1990 at The Levee, and shows an expanded six-man Go Van Gogh ripping through a cover of The Beatles’ version of Larry William’s “Slowdown.”  Of note is the addition of Mark Mangrone on keyboards and an unnamed player to be identified later on bongos.  They join the regular line of Mark and Stephen Beckner and John and Tim Rock.  On Monday, you can see Go Van Gogh with the vintage video for ”Shut Up, I Love You” on Radio Free Charleston.  For now, here’s “Slowdown” with a killer guitar solo by Stephen.
