Tonight we bring you one neat new video and a few older ones you probably haven’t seen yet. These are music videos by one of my MySpace friends, Uni And Her Ukelele, and first up it’s her performing the song “La La Happy, Too” with the Ding! String Trio, filmed at Aunt Daisy’s Boathouse in Titahi Bay, New Zealand.After the jump, we’ll look at a couple of Uni’s other songs.
Just last night, as I write this, I attended a rehearsal for the 12th production by CYAC of the Dan Kehde/Mark Scarpelli musical “Mary.” I had the RFC cameras with me, and less than twelve hours later, you get to see and hear two songs from “Mary”-the show opener, “Spin,” and the song that ends the first act, “Lord Of Mercy.” Chances are you’ll get to see at least one more song from last night’s session on our Christmas show in a few weeks.
This is another “half episode” of Radio Free Charleston, stripped down to just the music, so you can get a taste of this wonderful show before it starts its run.
“Mary” is a fun example of locally-created musical theater, and for the full info the show, which opens in two days, follow the jump.
This week’s Monday Morning Art is another digitally-finished gem from one of my old sketch books, circa 1989. This is called “Eye Thing,” and after the jump you can see how it evolved from a colored marker sketch into today’s digital painting, with a few rotations and aspect-ratio changes along the way.

AMV, or “Anime Music Video,” is a rather cool DIY side effect of today’s digital age. Fans are taking clips from their favorite pieces of Japanese animation, and editing them into music videos by various musical acts. Then they upload the results to YouTube to share with other fans. One local person doing this is Kristin Collier, a friend of RFC who made a cameo appearance in the video I created for Go Van Gogh’s song “Requiem For Pepperland.” Above you see Kristin’s video for the song “Rebirth” by Skillet. It uses clips from the Anime, Mai-Otome.

Episode 56 of Radio Free Charleston, “DEVOBAMA Shirt” is online now! This episode features searing hot rock from Dog Soldier, a really cool music video from The Button Flies, encore animation from Frank Panucci, and a trailer for the film “The Bride & The Grooms,” which is written and directed by Charleston native, Butch Maier.
Host segments are transmitted directly from the White Room at Stately Radio Free Charleston Manor. The namesake shirt for this episode is a commemorative T-shirt for the benefit concert that DEVO played for the Obama campaign in Akron back in October. This was the first time DEVO played in their hometown for more than 30 years, and they even backed up fellow Akron native Chrissie Hynde on a song from the new Pretenders album. I didn’t make it to the show, but I had to have the shirt. Cool, ain’t it?
The debut CD by Huntington singer Marcie Bullock is a powerful collection of original songs anchored by her dynamic vocals and arrangements that defy simple labels. “Spent” straddles the worlds of blues, jazz, and rock, with a hint of country in the mix. Bullock’s versatility as a singer is on full display, as she alternately belts out blues/rock jams and tenderly delivers jazzy ballads.
“Spent” is nearly a concept album, with many of the tunes chronicalling a relationship from its beginning to its decay. The songs are striking, with sharp lyrics and killer musical backing.
This week’s artistic kick-start is a digital oil painting I just finished, based on a piece I did with colored markers in a sketch book way back in 1989. I scanned it and manipulated it to get it to look the way it does. The original was called “Solitude,” and this was the ninth revision. Quisp. You know, the cereal from the 1960s that had the little alien with a Jerry Lewis voice on the commercials? It was the greatest breakfast cereal known to man. I get hungry just thinking of it. Tonight we’re looking at some of the classic commercials by Bullwinkle and Rocky creator Jay Ward, as well as a more recent web commercial by my pal, John Kricfalusi (of Ren and Stimpy fame).
After the jump, watch as Quisp battles his rival, Quake, for breakfast cereal dominance. Quake goes through a few changes along the way.
