SONGoftheDAY: “Letters” by Captain Crash and the Beauty Queen From Mars
SONG OF THE DAY: “Letters” by the Charleston, W.Va., duo with the longest name of any band in town: Captain Crash and the Beauty Queen From Mars (which we hereby abbreviate — for the sake of our fingers — CCBQFM). They are otherwise known as Jonathan Slack and Laura Summerhill.
HEAR THEM LIVE: CCBQFM, along with Joe Slack, perform 8 to 10 p.m., Friday, Feb. 8 at Capitol Roasters Cafe, 160 Summers St., in Charleston, W.Va.
WHO THEY ARE: (Cribbed from their Myspace page):
“Well, to start, I’m not even really sure what we are officially called. We’ve been called Aurora, Captain Crash & The Beauty Queen from Mars, or just our names. … Jonathan just turned 21, and Laura is 17. Both of us have been performing music of some sort… forever. We finally joined our stuff together a little over a year ago, when we had our first show at LaBelle Theater. Since then we’ve played at The Art Emporium, WVU Tech, talent shows, contests, appeared on “Radio Free Charleston,” and any other place we can get. I don’t really know how to describe our music other than acoustic. Most are originals written by Jonathan, with a few covers thrown in, such as The Beatles. Just so everyone knows, we will play ANYWHERE who wants us. We don’t need money. Just a time and place, and we’ll be there. Message/comment/IM us anytime…. On Friday, Jan. 25th, 2008, we promised each other, that if we ever got famous, we will end every show with “All You Need Is Love.” I hope one day we can do something that amazing.”

[…] Here in the Capitol City, Captain Crash and the Beauty Queen From Mars, who appeared as “Aurora” on episode 22 of RFC take the performance area at Capitol Roasters starting at 8PM. Joining RFC’s cutest couple will be Joe Slack, who appeared on episode 25 of RFC. This has been a big week for some of our youngest guests, as they landed an article in the Metro section of the Newspaper, and their new song, “Letters,” was featured as the “Song Of The Day” over in the Soundcheck blog, here at TheGazz.com. Having produced a few concerts, from Skyline
Productions, I would like to say that “letters”
really is a wonderful song. It can be related
to. In your area, we had The Putnam Co. Pickers;
and Kathy Mattea was at one of our concerts. If
I were still doing this kind of thing, I would’nt
hesitate to get in touch with you folks.
Congratulations.

[…] Captain Crash and the Beauty Queen From Mars with Joe Slack perform their song, “Letters.” This was recently featured as a Song of the Day over at the Soundcheck blog, and you’ll hear why on this show. Its’ a great song. Unfortunately, we had a huge audio glitch when we recorded it live at Capitol Roasters so we had to take the live video and transform it into a “Music Video.” I used the audio from Jonathon, Laura, and Joe’s demo in place of live recording, and I think it came out pretty good. I would have rather have used the actual live recording, but it would have had to have been re-taped, and that would have meant waiting to get this song on the show. Since Jonathon, Laura and Joe (plus Seven Minutes Till Midnight and Jordan Searls) are playing a show TONIGHT at the La Belle Theater, I thought it’d be timely to include this song this week. The kids will also be at Books A Million Saturday from 2 PM to 4 PM. […]
