SONGoftheDAY: “Ghosts of Cabell County” by ‘85 Flood

LISTEN: “Ghosts of Cabell County” by ‘85 Flood
Singer and guitarist Aaron Hawley of the West Virginia band ‘85 Flood talks about the song “Ghosts of Cabell County” from the group’s new CD “Toolshed Shangri-La,” to be released Friday, Feb. 22, in a show at 123 Pleasant St., Morgantown, on a bill that also features The Emergency.

HAWLEY: “‘Ghosts of Cabell County’ is a song that was written late one night while I was staring out my back window at pine trees in the dark. It was one of those tunes that just fell out of my head and onto the paper rather quickly, without much effort at all. The images in the song came naturally and by the end of the whole process, as I was sitting there alone with guitar in hand, I had managed to spook myself.
“To me this song is about a common find among the West Virginia hills: the old dilapidated family cemetery. It’s not about any one place in particular, but instead a composite of all those creepy old backwoods finds that you can stumble along walking in the woods. There’s history in those woods, and it’s something that I feel people need to be reminded of sometimes. It’s a history none of us can escape. ‘85 Flood really prides ourselves in being a West Virginia band and I think this song really represents that.”
LINEUP: ‘85 Flood is made up of: Aarlon Hawley - guitar, vocals; Adam Van Scoy - guitar; Dusty Hays - bass; Mike Deragon - drums.
