Frog Creek Books now has two books by leading WV filmmaker
Congrats to Mike Sublette who is getting married next Saturday
Gerry Milnes is the reigning WV Filmmaker of the Year - until October when a new one will be chosen. He also is a great musician and author. I saw a recent ad for the WV Book Festival with his picture which pleased me since Milnes has been writing great books for a long time. ( Too bad the ad didn’t i nclude a picture of another great WV author, Ken Hechler….) Frog Creek Books of Charleston has recently announced that they have copies in stock of two of his books including his new one, “Signs, Cures and Witchery”.
His other book they have in stock is “Play of a Fiddle: Traditional Music, Dance and Folklore in West Virginia” (1999) from UK Press. You can purchase his many great WV music films at the Augusta Heritage Store.
Another book that looks interesting is the re-printed “Secret Life and Brutual Death of Mamie Thurman” about a Logan socialite, published by Quarrier Press.
Frog Creek Books is the leading store in West Virginia for WV/Appalachian films as well as books, music, and other materials. Unlike every other WV bookstore, they have hundreds of items, not just a handful like so many chain stores, and even their local competition, Taylor Books. Mike Sublette has done a great job converting his store from being aimed at used books to Appalachian materials, sponsoring book signings, some of the films at the South Charleston Museum’s WV Film Series, and a whole lot more. I recently purchased a copy of Jack Wright’s great “Music of Coal” double-CD set. Frog Creek is the ONLY source in the state for many of WV’s own independent filmmakers’ great films, movies from Appalshop, and the ONLY distributor in the WORLD of WV’s greatest indie feature, “Correct Change.”
