Solstice - a well made film about a stripper

Jason Brown is a West Virginia-raised filmmaker now living in Greensboro, teaching at UNC Greensboro. He has produced a great short film about a contemporary stripper who faces her life head on. Apparently, like Mike Lilly’s “gritty” film, “Correct Change,” (which is about a street prostitute in Charleston, WV) not too many people want to see it. That is unfortunate. It won an award at The West Virginia Filmmakers Film Festival and has great acting, music, cinematography, and a believable story. Visit the website of director  Brandon Johnson and learn more about a very nice film about a tragic subject - like many great films, e.g., “Gone, Baby, Gone.”

WV filmmaker Jason Brown produced this film about a middle-aged stripper facing an abortion. Using beautiful cinematography and music, we first see Summer warming up as a dance. She goes to work at “The Last Summer,” only to discover that she can’t get the drugs she needs to perform. She talks to the possible father of her child, finally gets some cocaine, and goes on stage to perform. During her pole routine, one of the customers attacks her on stage. Another stripper has brought Sienna, her 13-year old mute daughter with her, only to discover that Julian, the bar manager, has raped her. The mother shoots the man with his own gun. The final scene is Summer, returning to her warm-up gym, fantasizing that her child has been born and grown up to become a little dancer. Rough language. Full student production crew.
