Luis Argeo e-mailed me from Spain that his excellent 2007 documentary about the Northern Spanish (Asturian) community of Spelter, WV is now available from WVPBS. They were instrumental in the original production of the film and have shown it on their network. It’s a fascinating film that actually returns to the hometowns in Spain of some of the immigrants, showing how people people back and forth, and more importantly, sent money back to impoversished relatives.
“AsturianUS” is available for purchase for $30.00. The contact person is: Jan Johnson West Virginia Public Broadcasting 600 Capitol Street Charleston WV 25301 Phone: 304-556-4903 Fax: 304-556-4980 jjohnson@wvpubcast.org You can also order it at: audienceservices@wvpubcast.org.
On Saturday, March 9th, at 7 PM, the South Charleston Museum, despite a dangerous winter storm, presented two new films by former Charleston resident Rebecca Frischkorn. About 20 people attended the event including local gardeners who presented their flower displays. Presiding gardener and SCM board member Phyllis Shawver gave out various gardening creations as door prizes. Despite the small crowd, it was a good night for gardeners. (more…)
John Lilly with Hazel Dickens
Hazel Dickens, revered West Virginia songwriter and performer and 2007 inductee into the new West Virginia Music Hall of Fame, was an honored guest at the recent International Folk Alliance conference, held in Memphis, Tennessee, February 20-23. The four-day event attracted approximately 2,000 folk music disk jockeys, promoters, booking agents, journalists and performers to the organization’s 20th annual gathering, held at the Memphis downtown Marriott hotel and adjacent conference center. Clips from Hollywood Librarian, Remote Access and Book ‘Em will be shown in Flatwood, WV on April 3rd as part of the West Virginia Library Association’s annual spring conference called “Spring Fling.” It seems like lots of movies these days show scenes in libraries. Remote Access is the most touching film I have ever seen about libraries, people, and animals. (more…)
MS Awareness Week takes place March 10th– 15th. To support the over 3200 who live with MS everyday in West Virginia and to move us closer to a world free of MS, the West Virginia Division of the National MS Society has organized an Awareness Day film festival to take place on Wednesday March 12, 2008 from 2 PM to 3 PM at the Capitol Theater located on Summers Street in Charleston, WV. The festival will feature several short films directed and produced by those living with MS.

Joe Geiger, acting director of the WV Archives, has informed me that the highway historic marker made in honor of Bill Blizzard should be placed sometime soon on Kanawha Blvd. outside the offices of the Historic UMWA District 17 headquarters in Charleston.

Ashley C. Stinnett is a Huntington-based actor, director, and writer who is best known for his indie horror film, “Lake Forest.” It is definitely one of the best indie horror films made in WV during the last few years. His most recent creation is a 29 minute documentary, “The Second Amentment - A Guarantee of Freedom.” It will have its premiere at the 2008 Appalachian Film Festival next month in Huntington.
