Ken Hechler last Friday, May 9th, gave a keynote address at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis to Legislators from Turkey, the US and others. He spoke about his relationship with MLK and the Truman Doctrine that was created to create Turkey and Greece from Communist take-over. He was  invited to speak at the conference sponsored by Former Members of Congress on Turkey on “Turkey and Civil Rights.” Ken pointed out that the revolution that brought democracy to Turkey in 1923 was a bloodless revolution, unlike the American, French, Russian and other similar revolutions. The Turkish delegation was impressed with Hechler’s historical awareness.

The Turkish Ambassador spoke about Kurds and Armenians during the conference.

I was explaining to Ken that one of WV’s leading writers, Mary Lee Settle, is well known for having lived and written in Turkey.
